'Nazrein Mili Jab To Dil Muskuraye' — when our eyes met, the heart smiled — is one of the nine songs Damodar Sharma composed to Roopbani's lyrics for Alladin (1945), Nanubhai Vakil's costume fantasy for Mohan Pictures, Bombay. The title places it precisely: the classical Urdu-Hindi moment of the first exchanged glance, the encounter on which the entire romantic architecture of the genre is built. No singer is credited for the number in HindiGeetMala, MySwar or Cinemaazi, and no recording of it is known to survive.

No audio of this song is accessible, and any account of its melody would be invention rather than description. What can be said is generic and sourced: Damodar Sharma's working idiom across roughly two decades of fantasy and costume pictures was the compact studio ensemble of the period — harmonium and dholak carrying the pulse, a bowed line for the sustained phrases, and melodies written for singers who acted as well as sang, in a genre where clarity of tune mattered more than orchestral ambition.

Nazar milna — the meeting of glances — is the most heavily codified event in Urdu-Hindi love poetry. It is not a social pleasantry but a contract: to meet a gaze is to acknowledge feeling, and the entire subsequent grammar of reproach, waiting and betrayal depends on that first admission having taken place. Roopbani's line adds the consequence in the same breath — the heart smiled — which marks this as a song of arrival rather than of loss, one of the score's affirmative numbers rather than its complaints. Placed against 'Kaun Hamara Hai Nigahban' and 'Mohabbat Mein Badla Hua Hai Zamana' elsewhere in the same film, it shows Roopbani working the standard emotional arc of the genre across the nine titles.

Alladin belongs to the Arabian Nights line of Indian popular cinema, which reached the screen through the Parsi theatre's Urdu stage versions rather than from the literary source. Nanubhai Vakil had been working that seam since the silent era, and by 1945 he was among its most experienced practitioners. Mohan Pictures, Bombay, produced this one; the cast ran to more than a dozen names, headed by Prakash and Shanta Patel, with Rekha Pawar, Rafiq, Nawaz, N. A. Ansari, Syed Garib Shah and Ghulam Husain among the supporting players.

Nothing about the reception of this song has come down. It is absent from the 78-rpm discographies that preserve the better-documented 1945 scores, and it has never been anthologised. The song survives as a catalogue line: a title, a composer, a lyricist, an empty singer column — which is itself the most common fate of a 1945 film song, and the reason this entry exists.
