नील गगन है

'Neel Gagan Hai' is a Manna Dey solo in Shankarrao Vyas's Vikramaditya score and the film's second song built on the word gagan, after the Rajkumari duet 'Dekh Gagan Mein'. The two available registers disagree on its lyricist: Hindi Geetmala credits Ramesh Gupta, Wikipedia's table credits Roopdas. This entry follows Hindi Geetmala, which is the fuller and more direct source, and records the conflict rather than hiding it. No recording of the song is in circulation.

Sky songs in Hindi cinema are almost always slow and open — long lines, wide intervals, a held note somewhere near the top to give the ear the sense of distance the words are describing. That is a genre habit, not a fact about this particular recording, which has never been traced. What can be said with confidence is that Vyas gave it to Manna Dey, who by 1945 was already the composer's default choice for anything on this soundtrack requiring sustained, controlled tone: six of the film's ten numbers are his.

'Neel gagan' — the blue sky — is a Sanskritic construction rather than an Urdu one, and its presence marks the register the film was aiming at: a historical about a Gupta-era king, with Kalidas in the cast of characters, reaching for a vocabulary that sounds older and more Indic than the Persianised diction of the contemporary social film. Whether the song develops the image toward wonder, toward loneliness, or toward the passage of time cannot be established, because no text of it survives. The word itself carries all three possibilities in Hindi poetry, which is precisely why lyricists kept returning to it. No lyrics are reproduced here.

The film was Vijay Bhatt's for Prakash Pictures, commissioned by the Vikram Bimillennium Committee, with Prithviraj Kapoor as the king of Avanti. Its soundtrack is unusually tidy in construction — two Shiva numbers plus a second version of one of them, two acclamations, two sky songs, a philosophical solo, a chakor lyric and one martial-sounding number — which reads less like a set of situational songs written to a screenplay than like a composer's balanced record programme. This is one half of the sky pair.

Nothing of this song entered circulation, and the phrase itself was later carried far away from it by other, unrelated compositions. Its only claim on attention now is the credit dispute it preserves: two respectable sources, one film, one song, two different lyricists — a reminder of how thin and how contradictory the documentary base for 1940s Hindi film music can be once a picture stops being screened.
