A song from Himmat (1941) composed by Gobind Ram to Aziz Kashmiri's lyrics. The singer is not listed in available song catalogues, so the singer credit is left empty pending verification. The title's first-person boast — 'I am the queen of a golden city' — suggests a self-introducing, performative number.
The Poetry

Aziz Kashmiri was a poet-lyricist working in both Punjabi folk idioms and Urdu literary registers for Hindi films in the 1930s and 1940s. His song 'Inhin Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mora' from the same film Himmat draws on north Indian folk melody and the dupatta as a symbol of feminine honour. 'Main Hoon Rani Ek Sunehri Nagari' inhabits an entirely different register: declaratory, fantastical and celebratory. The image of a 'sunehri nagari' (golden city) is rooted in folk song and children's poetry as a space of wish-fulfilment, beauty and power untouched by the ordinary world — a realm where the speaker's queenly status is both natural and absolute. The first-person construction 'main hoon rani' (I am the queen) turns the song into a proclamation: the character announces her own identity rather than being introduced by another. This self-naming device was a stock tool of the fantasy and mythological film song.
The Story

Himmat (1941) was directed by Roop K. Shorey and is a significant early credit for music director Gobind Ram (also known as Pandit Gobindram). The film starred Manorama, Radha and Ragni. Among its songs was 'Inhin Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mora', sung by Shamshad Begum in only her second Hindi film — a traditional Dadra that became one of Gobind Ram's earliest public recognitions and whose lyrics would later resonate with a different setting in the celebrated Pakeezah (1972). 'Main Hoon Rani Ek Sunehri Nagari' was a different kind of number from the same score: its first-person, self-announcing tone ('I am the queen of a golden city') suggests a character-introduction song, common in early sound cinema when the camera was relatively static and songs carried the responsibility of establishing a character's personality and social position before dramatic action could develop.
