Overview

'Kya Zulm Kabhi Jeet Gaya' is the Manna Dey solo in Mazdoor (1945) and the song that states the film's thesis directly: injustice does not, in the end, prevail. Gopal Singh Nepali wrote it and Hari Prasanna Das composed it. The Saregama/HMV reissue of the album lists the same recording as 'Jeet Hamari Hai' — the victory is ours — while song indexes built from the Geet Kosh file it by its opening line; it runs 3:18. For Manna Dey, still in the earliest phase of a career that would not break through until Mashaal (1950), this is among the oldest Hindi film recordings that survive.

The Music

No description of the arrangement has been published and the track has not been assessed here by listening, so nothing is claimed about its raag, metre or scoring. The structural facts are these: it is the album's only male solo, it runs 3:18, and it is a declarative rather than a lyrical number — the reissue title alone tells you the song ends on an assertion. Manna Dey in 1945 was a light, flexible, classically-schooled voice with none of the weight he would later carry; a composer using him at that stage was buying accuracy and stamina rather than star recognition.

The Poetry

Nepali frames the song's central claim as a rhetorical question rather than a slogan, which is the more durable choice: instead of promising victory, he asks the listener to name a single occasion on which cruelty has finally held. The question form invites agreement rather than demanding it, and it lets a labour song get past the register of the political speech into something a character can actually sing. That the record was later retitled with the answer — 'the victory is ours' — shows how directly the question was heard. Written in 1945, two years before independence, the lyric works simultaneously as workplace argument and as something larger, without ever naming either.

The Story

Mazdoor is a mill story: a village youth rises to manager after saving the owner's daughter, the girl he left in the village turns up looking for work, and a labour dispute forces him to choose between the man who promoted him and the people he came from. The film ends with him on the workers' side. In a plot organised around exactly that choice, the one male solo on the soundtrack is the song that carries the workers' position, which is why the reissue could retitle it as a collective claim without distorting it.

The Legacy

The song's value now is double. As a recording it is one of the earliest surviving pieces of Manna Dey's Hindi film work, made when he was still assisting composers rather than fronting scores. As a text it belongs to the thin but continuous line of Hindi film labour songs that runs from Mehboob's Roti (1942) through this film to Do Bigha Zamin (1953) and beyond — films that put working people's grievances into song at a moment when the industry mostly did not. The picture is gone; the record, on the Saregama/HMV reissue, is not.

Margin Notes

The Saregama/HMV reissue of the Mazdoor album lists this Manna Dey solo as 'Jeet Humari Hai', while indexes derived from the Hindi Film Geet Kosh list the same track by its opening line, 'Kya Zulm Kabhi Jeet Gaya'.

Manna Dey had entered Hindi films in 1942 under his uncle K. C. Dey and would not have his breakthrough until Mashaal (1950); the two Mazdoor recordings belong to that long early stretch when he was better known as a composer's assistant than as a singer.
