Overview

'Khwaab Ki Duniya' is the only song from Sawan (1945) whose text has been collected and preserved by a lyrics archive; for the other eight, only the titles survive. It is a song of consolation built on a single sustained argument — that the world of dreams and stars is distant and yet not truly out of reach — and it works that idea through a sequence of images of desolation giving way to light. C. Ramchandra composed it to I. C. Kapoor's lyric. No singer is credited in any surviving listing.

The Music

No recording circulates, so the setting cannot be described from the sound. The lyric's shape does constrain what the tune must have been: a repeated two-line refrain that returns after each verse, verses built in short paired lines, and a structure that gathers rather than climaxes. That is the standard 1940s 'philosophical' film song architecture — slow to medium tempo, harmonium and strings, minimal percussion under the refrain — and C. Ramchandra was writing squarely inside it in 1945, several years before the rhythmic experiments that made his later reputation.

The Poetry

The lyric turns on a paradox stated in its opening couplet and never abandoned: the world of dreams and stars is far away, and at the same time not far. Everything after that is an unfolding of the claim. A garden laid waste is told that a colourful spring is close; a world of restless longing is promised that peace will one day arrive; and the closing movement predicts that when the black clouds have passed and golden rays returned, the listener will look back at these very anxieties and laugh at having held them. The rhetorical mode is address rather than lament — the speaker is consoling someone, possibly themselves — and the vocabulary is the shared Urdu-Hindi stock of chaman, bahaar, aandhi and kiran that a 1945 audience could follow without effort. Out of respect for copyright no lines are quoted here; the description above is a paraphrase of the argument, not the text.

The Story

Sawan (1945) was produced by Sanjivan Art Productions of Bombay and directed by Dwarka Khosla, with Motilal and Shanta Apte at the head of the cast. C. Ramchandra wrote all nine songs to lyrics by I. C. Kapoor; no plot summary of the film survives in accessible sources, so what is known of its content comes almost entirely from the song titles preserved in the record catalogues. That this one lyric was collected while the other eight vanished is a small accident of archiving rather than a measure of the song's fame — hindigeetmala.net notes that it usually adds lyrics only when audio or video of a song surfaces, and for Sawan it lists no video at all. The song therefore sits in an unusual position: its words are readable, its music is not hearable, and its singer is unknown.

The Legacy

The song has no afterlife in performance — no reissue, no upload, no anthology. Its value is that it is the one place where Sawan speaks in its own words rather than through a catalogue line, and it shows what I. C. Kapoor's writing for this film sounded like: plain, image-led, consoling, and pitched at an audience that in 1945 had ample use for the promise that the clouds would pass.

This is the only one of Sawan's nine songs whose lyric text has been collected anywhere; for the other eight, only the titles survive.

Singer credit for this song is not preserved. Of Sawan's nine documented songs, three carry a voice credit — 'Barkha Ki Rut Hai' (C. Ramchandra, Kusum Mantri, Hamida Banu and unnamed others, per the Hindi Film Geet Kosh), 'Mori Oonchi Atariya Pe' (Amirbai Karnataki) and 'Hanso Garibo Pe' (Hamida Banu and Khan Mastana) — so the singer field here has been left empty rather than filled by inference.

MySwar lists the Sawan records as a Regal Records release, and hindigeetmala.net catalogues the film's composer as 'Chitalkar Ramchandra' — one of at least four professional signatures C. Ramchandra used in the 1940s, alongside Ram Chitalkar, Annasaheb and, for Marathi films, R. N. Chitalkar. No scan of an actual Sawan disc label has been seen.
