Released by T-Series in July 2022 as part of the film's promotional rollout — alongside the original 'Kahani' sung by Mohan Kannan — this version's music video depicts the timeline of Laal's journey from childhood to adulthood, in contrast to the main version's framing. Nigam has said in interviews that he recorded his vocals for the song within about five hours, describing the composition as 'very beautiful' and 'wonderfully written,' and separately remarked that the song's reception could have matched a track like Kal Ho Naa Ho had the film not been caught up in surrounding controversy and negativity ahead of its release. The rendition earned Nigam a Best Male Playback Singer nomination at the Filmfare Awards, part of the recognition for a soundtrack that ultimately won the Mirchi Music Award for Album of the Year.

Pritam's Kahani theme was recorded in two distinct voices — Mohan Kannan for the film's opening rendition, and Sonu Nigam for this alternate version, both set to the same underlying melody built around a recurring wordless refrain ('pam para rara ram'). Nigam's take leans on his signature warmth and controlled restraint, recorded, by his own account, in a single sitting of roughly five hours — an unusually quick turnaround for a lead film theme, reflecting how quickly the melody sat with his voice.

Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyric for Kahani frames life itself as an unfolding story ('kahani') too strange and wondrous to fully explain — 'ho raha hai jo, ho raha hai kyun, tum na jaano na hum' (whatever is happening, why it's happening, neither you nor I know) — a gentle acceptance of life's unpredictability that mirrors the film's own Forrest Gump-inspired philosophy of drifting through extraordinary circumstance without full understanding or control.

Laal Singh Chaddha, Advait Chandan's adaptation of Forrest Gump, uses 'Kahani' as its title theme, framing the entire film as a story being told — fittingly, as the narrative itself is structured around Laal recounting his life during a train journey. This Sonu Nigam-voiced version was released alongside the Mohan Kannan original as part of the promotional campaign, with its music video specifically tracing Laal's arc from childhood to adulthood.
