The Monographपरिचय Overview

The second of Rajkumari's two ghazals in Nasib (1945), written by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and composed by Gobind Ram, and the film's best-documented surviving side — Saregama still sells it as an individual paid download with the full credit block attached, which is how much of Nasib's authorship can be confirmed at all. The title is a deferral rather than a confession: the state of the heart will be told, but later, on some occasion that has not arrived. Around three minutes, the standard length of a single 78-rpm side.
The Music

Gobind Ram keeps the ghazal setting spare, the way the mid-1940s film ghazal was built before orchestras grew: a slow tabla or dholak cycle underneath, harmonium sustaining, a bowed line answering the vocal in the gaps, and long unfilled spaces where the singer's phrasing has to carry the meaning alone. Rajkumari's voice suits this exactly — thin, forward, very accurate, with the ability to hold a note straight and then bend it late, which is the technique that makes a deferred line like this one sound genuinely deferred rather than merely slow. The reference account of Gobind Ram's career notes his fluency across ghazals, thumris and light forms as one of the reasons his catalogue is such a useful cross-section of 1940s film music.
The Poetry

The Urdu construction 'haal-e-dil' — the condition of the heart — is one of the most heavily used compounds in film ghazal, and Ishwar Chandra Kapoor's move is to attach it to a future passive: it will be told to you. The passive voice removes the speaker as an agent, so the telling becomes something that will happen rather than something she will do, and the deferral is thereby made to look like fate rather than choice. That is precisely the thematic hinge of a film called Nasib. Within the album the line sits opposite the film's street songs and freedom duets: where those are sung outward to a crowd in plain Hindi, this is sung inward in Persianate register, and the two poles between them describe the social range that a 1945 Hindi social film was expected to cover.
The Story

Nasib was produced by Silver Films, the company the actress Pramila ran with her husband Kumar after he was dismissed from Ranjit Studios in 1942, and directed by B. D. Vedi, a silent-era figure who made only four talkies. Gobind Ram had six Hindi releases in 1945 and was then at the height of a career that had begun with Jeevan Jyoti in 1937 and would end with Naqab in 1955. Rajkumari, who carries three of Nasib's eight songs, was one of the small group of voices that the Bombay industry ran on before playback singing expanded after independence. No print of the film survives; this song does, and its Saregama entry — Rajkumari, I. C. Kapoor, Gobindram — is the only place where the film's credits can be read off the rights-holder's own records rather than from a song index.
The Legacy

This is the Nasib song with the strongest documentary trail, and the trail is commercial rather than critical: an active Saregama product page, a streaming album, a credit block. That is a common shape for 1940s Hindi film music — the film is gone, no review of it was preserved, and what remains is the rights record kept by the company that pressed the shellac. As a piece of writing the title phrase went on to be reused across decades of Hindi film songwriting, since 'haal-e-dil' is common property; as a recording, this remains a compact and characteristic example of Rajkumari in the ghazal register during her busiest years, before the field around her changed at the end of the decade.

Saregama's own product page for this song is the single source in which the film's composer, lyricist and singer can be read off the rights-holder's records rather than a third-party song index — it credits Rajkumari, I. C. Kapoor and Gobindram.

Rajkumari sings three of the eight documented Nasib songs — this ghazal, 'Unhen Yaad Aaye Guzra Zamana' and the lullaby 'Sejiya Sovat Mori Rani' — more than any other voice on the album.
