गलियां रिटर्न्स

Galliyan Returns (गलियां रिटर्न्स) is Ankit Tiwari's own callback rendition of his 2014 chartbuster 'Galliyan' from Ek Villain, recreated for Mohit Suri's 2022 spiritual sequel Ek Villain Returns starring John Abraham, Disha Patani, Arjun Kapoor and Tara Sutaria. Tiwari, who composed and sang the original, returned to write new music around the same emotional core and again voiced the track himself, with lyrics reworked by Manoj Muntashir Shukla (rather than the original's Mithoon-associated team), giving longtime fans a familiar melodic anchor within a fresh story of obsessive love and revenge. Released by T-Series as part of the film's soundtrack ahead of its 29 July 2022 theatrical release, the song traded on nostalgia for the earlier hit while functioning as its own standalone romantic ballad, appealing to audiences who remembered the original's status as one of the defining heartbreak anthems of the mid-2010s.

Ankit Tiwari, both composer and singer of the 2014 original, rebuilds Galliyan Returns around the same aching, string-and-piano-led melodic template that made the first version a phenomenon — a slow-burn ballad structure designed to showcase his own restrained, emotive vocal delivery. Rather than radically reinventing the tune, the 'Returns' version leans into recognizability, using subtly updated arrangement textures to sit comfortably in a 2022 film soundtrack while still triggering the nostalgia of the original for listeners who grew up with it.

Manoj Muntashir's rewritten lyrics keep the core imagery of lanes and streets ('galliyan') as a metaphor for wandering through memory and estrangement, echoing the emotional register of the 2014 original while adapting specific lines to the new film's narrative of love complicated by obsession and violence. The lyric leans on the shared Hindi-Urdu vocabulary of longing, framing the beloved's absence as a kind of homelessness within one's own familiar streets.

Ek Villain Returns, directed by Mohit Suri, is a spiritual (non-linear-story) sequel to his 2014 hit Ek Villain, following two interwoven love-and-revenge threads — one involving John Abraham and Disha Patani, the other Arjun Kapoor and Tara Sutaria. Produced by T-Series and Balaji Motion Pictures, the film released theatrically on 29 July 2022. Galliyan Returns was positioned in the soundtrack as a deliberate nod to the franchise's musical legacy, allowing Tiwari to reprise a song intrinsically tied to the original film's identity within the new story's emotional arc.

While Galliyan Returns did not replicate the runaway cultural dominance of the 2014 original — which remains one of the most-streamed Hindi breakup songs of its era — it drew steady engagement as part of Ek Villain Returns' soundtrack and served its intended purpose of connecting the sequel to its predecessor's musical identity, giving Ankit Tiwari a rare opportunity to revisit and re-record one of his signature hits within an official franchise continuation.
