The Monographपरिचय Overview

Ek Dhaaga Toda Maine is the most remarkable song in the Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story (2025, Disney+ Hotstar) soundtrack — composed originally in English by Kaveri Kapur (the film's lead actress) at age 15 as 'Reminisce', then reworked in Hindi in just two days by lyricist Prasoon Joshi and produced by A.R. Rahman, who championed the song after Kaveri presented it to him. The title — 'One thread I broke' — captures the fragile moment of a relationship's beginning: the single act of connection that changes everything. Prasoon Joshi's Hindi lyric, built on Kaveri's original composition, represents an unusual creative triangle between a debut actress-songwriter, a legendary film lyricist, and India's most celebrated film composer.
The Music

A.R. Rahman's production of Ek Dhaaga Toda Maine is characteristically sparse and luminous — he builds the song around Kaveri's original melodic idea, adding harmonic depth without overwhelming the personal quality of the composition. The minimalist electronics and piano-centric arrangement give the song a quality of sustained tension: a thread held taut, not yet broken. Rahman's production restraint here is itself a statement — he hears the song's essence and serves it rather than remaking it.
The Poetry

Prasoon Joshi's Hindi lyrics, built on Kaveri's original English composition, navigate the subtle emotional territory of a relationship's first tremor. 'Ek dhaaga toda maine' — 'one thread I broke' — is an ambiguous act: breaking a thread could mean severing a connection, but also freeing oneself from constraint. The lyric holds this ambiguity deliberately, letting the listener's emotional state determine which meaning prevails.
The Story

Kaveri Kapur wrote 'Reminisce' (the English original) at age 15. When she presented it to A.R. Rahman, he expressed interest in producing and reworking it for the film. The Hindi rework was completed in just two days by Prasoon Joshi. Rahman publicly expressed appreciation for Kaveri's original composition, noting her songwriting instinct as unusual for someone her age. The song marks Kaveri's dual debut — as an actress in Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story and as a Bollywood songwriter.
The Legacy

Ek Dhaaga Toda Maine is one of the most unusual songs in recent Bollywood history: an actress's childhood composition, reworked by a Padma Bhushan-winning lyricist and produced by a double Oscar winner, appearing in her debut film. Its creative origin story is as remarkable as the song itself.
