Overview

The one song of Wasiyatnama that both hindigeetmala and MySwar credit to two named voices: Asit Baran and Sumitra Devi, who plays Rohini, the young widow at the centre of the story. It is the only 1945 New Theatres number in which the film's heroine is documented as singing for herself.

The Music

A consolation duet, written so that two untrained-for-playback screen voices can carry it between them — the shared-line construction that Boral used to keep actor-singers inside their range while still giving a scene two people and one melody. MySwar files it under the fuller opening 'Bhool Ja Tu Duniya Ka Gham Bhool Ja'.

The Poetry

Bhool ja — forget it — is the standard consolation of Urdu-Hindi film verse, and the phrase duniya ka gham puts the sorrow outside the two people rather than between them: the world is what hurts, not you. In a plot about a widow, a cousin and a forged will, that displacement is doing a great deal of work, because the thing the two of them would actually have to forget is each other.

The Story

Wasiyatnama was made at New Theatres, Calcutta, directed by Soumyen Mukherjee, and is the studio's Hindi telling of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1878 Bengali novel Krishnakanter Uil — a household destroyed by a tampered will and a widow's forbidden attachment. R.C. Boral composed the six songs and Munshi Zakir Hussain wrote all of them, the same lyricist-composer pairing New Theatres used that year on Bimal Roy's Hamrahi. No print of the film is known to be in circulation; the songs survive on record.

The Legacy

The duet is the clearest surviving trace of Sumitra Devi as a singer. She had just come off the female lead of Meri Bahen and a BFJA best-actress award, and the Wasiyatnama record set is the reason her own voice, rather than a playback voice standing in for her, can still be heard at all.
