The Monographपरिचय Overview

Dhappa (धप्पा) is a playful, family-toned track from Trial Period (2023), Aleya Sen's JioCinema original comedy-drama starring Genelia Deshmukh and Manav Kaul. Composed by the duo Mago & Mayank (Sidhant Mago and Mayank Mehra) with lyrics by Sidhant Mago, the song is sung by Saloni Aggarwal, Yashika Sikka, and Mayank Mehra, and was released by Panorama Music in early July 2023 ahead of the film's 21 July 2023 premiere. Built around the Hindi hide-and-seek exclamation 'dhappa' (roughly, 'tag, found you!'), the song plays as a warm, game-like interlude that mirrors the film's plot — a single mother's six-year-old son proposing a 30-day 'trial period' for a prospective father figure — giving the soundtrack a lighter, family-audience-friendly counterpoint to the film's more dramatic beats.
The Music

Composer duo Mago & Mayank (Sidhant Mago and Mayank Mehra) build Dhappa around a light, sing-along melody suited to a children's-game motif, with vocalists Saloni Aggarwal and Yashika Sikka trading lines alongside co-composer Mayank Mehra's own vocals. The arrangement stays deliberately simple and warm rather than dance-floor-driven, in keeping with the song's role as a gentle, family-audience interlude within Trial Period's soundtrack.
The Poetry

Sidhant Mago's lyrics build the entire song around the hide-and-seek exclamation 'dhappa,' rhyming it playfully with everyday Hindi words like 'pappa' (papa) — a simple, childlike wordplay device that mirrors the film's own premise of a child auditioning a temporary father through a game-like 'trial.'
The Story

Trial Period follows Ana Roy Choudhary (Genelia Deshmukh), a single mother in Delhi's Chittaranjan Park, whose six-year-old son Romi asks for a father on a temporary 30-day trial basis. She settles on PD (Manav Kaul), an educated but unemployed man from Ujjain, and the film — directed by Aleya Sen with a supporting cast including Gajraj Rao, Shakti Kapoor, and Sheeba Chadha — follows this unconventional arrangement. Premiering on JioCinema on 21 July 2023, the film received largely positive reviews and went on to earn three nominations at the 2023 Filmfare OTT Awards. Dhappa, released as a promotional single days before the premiere, plays into the film's game-like central conceit of a 'trial' relationship.
The Legacy

Dhappa's official Panorama Music video has drawn a solid, family-audience-scale viewership in the low millions on YouTube — a respectable number for a comedy-drama's soundtrack song rather than a chart-topping crossover hit. It is best remembered as a charming, tonally distinct piece within Trial Period's soundtrack, and the film's broader critical reception (including its Filmfare OTT nominations) helped keep the soundtrack, including Dhappa, in circulation among family-content audiences on JioCinema.

Margin Notes
