दादरा — मिस काली जान

“Dadra — Miss Kali Jan” is a representative gramophone-era dadra side credited to the tawaif recording artist Kali Jan, entered at c. 1920 with all session details flagged — a document of the early record industry's under-documented working singers.

A working singer's dadra: Pilu-tinted phrases, sarangi shadowing, the six-beat lilt that fit the three-minute side like a glove. Such discs were cut in batches, priced for the mass catalogue, and sold on the strength of genre and novelty as much as name.

The dadra's small dramas — the taunting lover, the unanswered message — were the shared property of hundreds of singers. What individualised a side was delivery; what survived of most singers is only the label's two words: 'Miss Kali Jan'.

For each Gauhar Jaan the companies recorded, they recorded dozens of city singers whose biographies no one wrote. Kali Jan's name survives in early catalogues; her life does not. This entry deliberately preserves that asymmetry — the industry's body, not merely its crown.
