The Monographपरिचय Overview

Chhuppan Chhuppai (छुपन छुपाई) is the energetic opening-mood track from Mumbaikar (2023), the Santosh Sivan-directed action-thriller that streamed exclusively on JioCinema from 2 June 2023 and marked Vijay Sethupathi's Hindi film debut alongside Vikrant Massey. Composed by Ramdas V S and sung by playback veteran Benny Dayal (with Himanshu Singh credited alongside him on the official soundtrack release), the song is built as a brisk, percussive city-hustle number that sets the tone for the film's one-frantic-day, mistaken-identity plot involving a kidnapped gangster's son and a handful of unconnected Mumbai strangers whose paths collide. Released by Times Music as part of the film's nine-track soundtrack on 29 May 2023, ahead of the movie itself, Chhuppan Chhuppai functions as a scene-setter rather than a chart-topper — a functional, high-energy Mumbai-hustle anthem that critics largely passed over even as the film itself drew poor reviews, though the track found a modest life of its own on YouTube and Spotify as a standalone upbeat listen.
The Music

Ramdas V S builds Chhuppan Chhuppai around a driving, percussion-forward beat designed for movement and momentum rather than melodic lingering — fitting for a song meant to accompany a chase-and-mistaken-identity plot rather than a romantic or reflective moment. Benny Dayal, a singer known for exactly this kind of urgent, rhythmic vocal delivery (from tracks like Badtameez Dil and Pretty Woman), brings his characteristic clipped, energetic phrasing to the lead, while Himanshu Singh's credited vocal presence on the official release adds a second textural layer without disrupting the song's forward-charging pace.
The Poetry

The lyric leans on the children's game of hide-and-seek as its central image — a light, almost nursery-rhyme-simple conceit repurposed to describe adults dodging through a chaotic city day, running 'is dagar us dagar' (down this lane, down that lane) as fate and circumstance close in. It's a functional, scene-setting lyric rather than a poetically dense one, doing the job of establishing tone and momentum for an ensemble thriller rather than standing alone as a piece of writing.
The Story

Mumbaikar, directed by veteran cinematographer-turned-director Santosh Sivan, follows several unconnected Mumbai residents — including an unemployed youth dreaming of becoming a police officer and a small-town engineering graduate arriving for a job interview — whose lives collide after they become unintentionally entangled in the mistaken kidnapping of a local gangster's son. The film streamed exclusively on JioCinema from 2 June 2023 and was notable chiefly for marking Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi's Hindi-language debut opposite Vikrant Massey, with Tanya Maniktala, Sanjay Mishra, Ranvir Shorey and Hridhu Haroon rounding out the cast. Chhuppan Chhuppai plays early in this hectic, single-day narrative, its chase-and-hide energy mirroring the film's structure of strangers criss-crossing the city under mounting pressure.
The Legacy

Chhuppan Chhuppai did not chart nationally, reflecting Mumbaikar's overall muted critical and commercial reception (the film scored 0% on Rotten Tomatoes' critic tally), but its official Times Music YouTube upload has drawn a steady quarter-million-plus views, modest by Bollywood standards but respectable for an OTT-exclusive film's soundtrack cut, and the song continues to surface on Hindi 'high-energy'/'party' playlist compilations on YouTube and streaming platforms.
