The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Chaman Mein Kaun Aaya' is one of the seven Kanan Devi solos on the Ban Phool soundtrack, and the one that most clearly reaches for the Urdu poetic register rather than the folk-domestic one. Chaman — the garden — is the master setting of Urdu lyric, and a question about who has entered it is a question about disturbance: gardens in that tradition exist in order to be entered, ruined, abandoned or bloomed into. Dhiren Mitra composed the music and Pandit Madhur is credited with the words.
The Music

No recording could be located, and no contemporary description of the music exists in the sources consulted; the arrangement, scale and rhythm are therefore left blank rather than guessed. The one point worth registering is contextual: a Hindi film made in Calcutta in 1945 was competing with Bombay soundtracks — 1945 was the year of Zeenat, Badi Maa and Gaon Ki Gori — and a garden song in Urdu diction was part of the vocabulary a Calcutta production had to command in order to sound national rather than regional.
The Poetry

The chaman is not scenery in Urdu poetry; it is a jurisdiction. Everything that can happen to a self can be staged in it — the bulbul sings there, the gardener tends it, the autumn arrives, the hunter comes, the flower is picked. To ask kaun aaya, 'who has come', is therefore to register an event without naming it, and the ambiguity is deliberate: the arrival could be the beloved, spring, a stranger, or ruin. Placed in a film called Ban Phool, whose heroine is a flower growing outside any garden's wall, the question acquires an extra edge — the singer is asking about a cultivated space to which she may not belong.
The Story

The film's cast list positions Kanan Devi's Champa against Devi Mukherjee's zamindar Narendra and Krishnakant's Kishore, with Ahindra Choudhury, Rajmohan, Shyam Laha, Devbala, Bijoli, Hiralal and Kamal Mitra filling out the village. No scene description or plot summary of Ban Phool has survived in the filmographies and databases consulted, so this song cannot be placed in the narrative. Ban Phool was Niren Lahiri's Hindi outing in a year that also produced his best-known Bengali film, Bhabikaal.
The Legacy

Like the rest of the album, this song survives as a title and a credit line. Its usefulness is comparative: read alongside 'Malan Bata De', 'Hai Phagun Ki Raat' and 'Sawan Ki Badli Ne', it shows a lyricist deliberately covering the full spread of the Hindi film-song idiom in a single score — Urdu garden imagery at one end, folk seasonal song at the other — which is what a Calcutta production needed to do to sell in the Hindi belt.

1945's biggest Hindi soundtracks came out of Bombay — Zeenat, Badi Maa, Gaon Ki Gori — which is the market a Calcutta production like Ban Phool was reaching for.

Ban Phool's song titles range from Urdu garden diction (chaman) to Hindi folk-seasonal diction (Phagun, Sawan) and tatsama Hindi (vipda) — an unusually wide lexical spread for a nine-song score.
