From New Theatres' My Sister (Meri Bahen), 'Ae Katib-e-Taqdeer' is one of the film's K.L. Saigal numbers set by Pankaj Mullick. The song addresses the 'katib-e-taqdeer' — the writer of destiny — asking it to explain the design of one's fate, a familiar Urdu-poetic conceit that Saigal delivers in his late, autumnal voice. Mullick keeps the setting spare in the Calcutta-school manner, letting the lyric and the singer carry the weight.
