Overview

The yazh is the boat-shaped harp of ancient Tamilakam — one of India's oldest documented string instruments, played by the wandering 'panar' bards of the Sangam age. A 'yali' was carved at the tip of its curved ebony neck, a goatskin soundboard was glued down with tamarind paste, and between seven and twenty-one open goat-gut strings each sang a single note. Silenced in the 7th century before the rise of stick-zither veenas, the yazh spoke again two thousand years later through Swami Vipulananda's 'Yaazh Nool' and the chisel of Chennai's Tharun Sekar.

तत (Tata - stringed instruments)

In the Tata (stringed) category, the yazh is an ancient harp-class open-string instrument that produces each note by plucking a separate open string with the fingers. It is one of India's oldest arched-harp chordophones — played not with a bow but by plucking, with one string dedicated to each swara.

Physical

Description English

The yazh is an ancient Tamil harp with a boat- or trough-shaped wooden resonator from which a curved ebony neck rises like an archer's bow. Strings run from the top of the neck down to the resonator, each string fixed to a single note. The instrument stood 1 to 3 feet tall, and the head of the mythical creature 'yali' (yaali) was carved at the tip of its neck — the name 'yazh' is believed to derive from this 'yali'.

Body

Boat / trough-shaped resonator with a curved arched neck (bow-form)

Local hardwoods — emmaram (red wood) or pala maram (jackfruit wood); modern recreations use red cedar

30-90

Hollowed wooden trough whose open face is covered by a goatskin soundboard, glued down with a paste made from tamarind seeds

Strings

Open melody strings — one string per note, plucked directly; no fretting or string-stopping

Count: 7-21 (varies by type)Description Hindi:
Material: Goat-gut (intestine), shaped to varying thickness for different pitches; the ancient text Perumpanatruppadai insists the strings must be free of any twistsTuning Example: Each string tuned to a fixed swara of an ancient Tamil pann (mode); the Sengotti/Siriyazh spanned seven notes, the Periyazh up to 21
Tuning Hindi:

The classical yazh is a pure open-string harp and traditionally carries NO sympathetic (tarab) strings — unlike the later sarangi or sitar. Its resonance comes entirely from the skin soundboard and hollow trough.

Material: Not applicableInstallation: Not applicableFunction: Not applicable

No dedicated drone strings; the yazh is melodic, sounding one note per plucked string

Material: Not applicable

Bow

None — plucked, not bowed (meettu, finger-plucking)

The yazh has no bow; strings are plucked with the fingers of both hands, harp-fashion

0

Fingers pluck the open strings directly (meettu); the left and right hands share the string bank

Tuning Pegs

Tivavu / string-bar (melkol)

Instead of geared pegs, the yazh's strings were tied to a tuning bar (string-bar) pierced with holes, and secured with a natural lacquer called Arakku; pitch was set by adjusting each string's tension at this bar

Bridge

String-bridge (palam)

The strings pass over the skin soundboard and are anchored to the string-bar beneath it, transmitting vibration into the trough resonator

Wood, over a goatskin membrane

Frets

The yazh has no frets and no string-stopping — every note has its own separate open string, exactly like a Western harp. It cannot glide a meend; notes emerge discretely, one plucked string at a time.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The yazh's tone is soft, crystalline and bell-like — resonant yet quick to decay, like water drops falling in a still temple courtyard. Its skin soundboard lends a warm, organic resonance that sounds gentler and more archaic than modern metal-strung veenas.

Timbre

Warm, plucked-harp shimmer with a short sustain (gut-on-skin), rounder and softer than a metal-strung sitar or veena

Range

Roughly two octaves in the Periyazh (21 strings); about one octave in the seven-stringed Sengotti/Siriyazh

Dynamic Range

Intimate to moderate — a chamber and court instrument, not a projecting concert one; suited to voice accompaniment and recitation

Techniques

Description English: The core technique — plucking an open string with fingertip or nail. Since each string yields one note, the player runs the fingers across the string bank to weave melodic lines.
Usage: Foundation of all yazh playing; melodic phrases and arpeggiated runs
Description English: The ancient Tamil 'panns' — modal precursors to ragas — were realised on the yazh. Tuning the strings to a chosen pann, the player evoked its mood (pathos, valour, love). Panns later evolved into Carnatic ragas.
Usage: Melodic-modal music of the Sangam bards; devotional Tevaram recitation
Description English: A cascading, waterfall-like sweep produced by drawing a finger across several strings at once — akin to a harp glissando. Used for ornament and emotional climax.
Usage: Ornamental flourishes, transitions, dramatic emphasis
Description English: The yazh was fundamentally an accompanist's instrument — the panar (wandering bards) plucked it to underpin Sangam poetry and devotional song, the strings grounding and echoing the singer's voice.
Usage: Accompaniment to poetic recitation and temple hymns

The Listening Guide

When you listen to the yazh, remember it is a meend-less, open-string harp — each note rings separately and clearly. Begin with short revival demonstrations like 'The Sound of Yazh', where the Sengotti yazh's bell-like tone opens up; then hear panar-style vocal accompaniment, the strings cascading behind the singer's line. Rather than the sarangi's weeping meend, seek here a calm, drop-by-drop sacredness.

Margin Notes

The Silappatikaram and Pathuppattu describe four principal yazhs: Periyazh (21 strings), Makarayazh (19, named for the makara creature), Sakottu/Cakota yazh (14) and Sengotti/Siriyazh (just 7). String-count was each yazh's defining identity.

The yazh's soundboard was goatskin, fixed to the wooden body with a paste of tamarind seeds; the strings were goat-gut and the neck was ebony. Carved straight from nature, it was an entirely organic instrument.

Music historians hold that around the 7th century, as stick-zither veenas emerged, both the open-string yazh and the ancient harp-veena declined. A fretted veena could sound many notes on one string — a flexibility the one-note-per-string yazh could not match.

The Sri Lankan Tamil scholar Swami Vipulananda (1892–1947), in his treatise 'Yaazh Nool', reconstructed the yazh's stringing, types and tonal mathematics from ancient literary descriptions. That work became the cornerstone of modern revival efforts.

Questions & Answers
