Overview

The tuntuna is Maharashtra's single-string folk instrument — a small drum-like body with a paper/skin head over one mouth, a bamboo stick fixed to the side, and one metal string. Plucked repeatedly with a finger, its 'tun-tun' twang works as drone and rhythm at once, so a lone shahir can carry an entire powada on it. In the valour of powada, the devotion of gondhal, and the celebration of tamasha-lavani alike, this humble instrument becomes the heartbeat of the folk.

तत (Tata - stringed instruments)

The tuntuna belongs to the Tata (stringed) category of the Natya Shastra — it is a chordophone (tantu vadya) whose sound comes from a single metal string that is plucked rather than bowed. Repeated finger or plectrum plucking produces a rhythmic, buzzing drone.

Physical

Description English

The tuntuna is a simple yet vivid folk instrument — a small cylindrical drum-like body (about 8 inches) with one face covered by a skin or thick-paper membrane. A bamboo stick is fixed to the outer side of the body, and a single metal string runs from the centre of the membrane up to a tuning peg on the stick. The player repeatedly plucks the string with a finger while the other hand flexes the bamboo to alter tension, producing the characteristic buzzing 'tun-tun' twang.

Body

Small cylindrical / cup-shaped resonating drum

Wood or a section of bamboo/gourd, with a stretched membrane over one end

18-22 (approx. 8 inch)

Single open drum-shell whose membrane amplifies the plucked string's vibration

Strings

A single plucked playing/drone string — the defining feature of the tuntuna

Material: Steel/brass wire (traditionally sometimes gut or a twisted fibre)
Tuning Example: Tuned to the singer's Sa (tonic) or Sa-Pa, held as a constant drone/rhythm
Tuning Hindi:

The tuntuna has no sympathetic strings — its resonance comes from the membrane, not extra strings

Material: N/AInstallation: N/AFunction: N/A

The single main string itself is the drone — plucked continuously through a performance to hold the tonic and the pulse

Count: 1Material: Steel/brass wire

Bow

No bow (plucked, not bowed)

N/A — the string is plucked by finger or a small plectrum (mizrab)

N/A

The right-hand index finger (or a plectrum) strikes the string in a steady rhythmic pattern, unlike bowed instruments

Tuning Pegs

Khunti (tuning peg)

A single wooden peg at the top of the bamboo stick tensions the string; fine pitch/rhythm is bent live by squeezing the flexible bamboo

Bridge

Membrane (skin / paper head)

There is no wooden bridge as such — the string is anchored to the centre of the stretched membrane, which acts as both anchor and sound-radiating surface

Animal skin, parchment, or thick paper stretched over the drum mouth

Frets

The tuntuna has no frets and is not stopped along its length — it is essentially a single-pitch drone-rhythm instrument. Slight pitch inflection is achieved by pressing or releasing the flexible bamboo stick, which changes string tension.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The tuntuna's sound is lively, resonant and celebratory — a continuous 'tun-tun-tun' twang that serves simultaneously as drone (pitch anchor) and rhythm. The membrane adds a characteristic buzz, giving an energetic, carrying resonance that underpins both the valour of powada and the devotional fervour of gondhal.

Timbre

Bright, buzzing, percussive twang with a warm membrane resonance

Range

Effectively a single sustained pitch (the tonic drone) with small live bends via the bamboo

Dynamic Range

Moderate but penetrating — designed to cut through open-air folk gatherings, processions and ritual courtyards

The Listening Guide

To understand the tuntuna, first catch its pulse — it is drone and rhythm at once. In a powada, hear how the twang chases the shahir's battle-cry; then hear a sambal-tuntuna jugalbandi, where drum and string converse. Finally, hear a night-long gondhal, where a single string holds the goddess's note through the whole night.

Margin Notes

The tuntuna's greatest strength is that its single string provides both drone (steady pitch) and rhythm (beat) at once. This makes it the perfect companion for a solo shahir or bhajan-singer — needing neither a separate tanpura nor a separate drum.

In gondhal, the tuntuna's natural partner is the 'sambal' (a drum). This jugalbandi of string and drum is the signature of a Gondhali performance, where twang and beat together build the fervour of goddess-worship.

In modern tuntunas the membrane is often made of thick paper (traditionally also skin). It is this membrane that resonates the string's twang into the characteristic buzzing tone which distinguishes the ektara family.

In the powada tradition the tuntuna has been called the shahir's 'weapon' — for it was with this instrument and voice, not the sword, that shahirs carried the sagas of Maratha heroes, and later social movements such as the Samyukta Maharashtra agitation, to the masses.

Questions & Answers
