Overview

The khuang is the principal drum of the Mizo people — carved from a hollowed log of softwood, headed with animal hide at both ends and played by hand. From the deep pulse of the Cheraw bamboo dance to the Chapchar Kut festival and church singing, it is the heart of Mizo social and religious life, and the only one of the old Mizo instruments still in everyday use.

Physical

Description English

The khuang is the principal drum of the Mizo people — carved from a single hollowed log of softwood roughly three feet (about 90 cm) long, with both open ends covered in animal hide. It is an entirely hand-crafted instrument and the beating heart of every Mizo celebration, ritual and church song.

Body

Cylindrical / gently barrel-shaped, open at both ends

A single hollowed log of softwood (locally available forest timber)

approx. 90 (roughly three feet); varies by size class

The hollowed log itself is the resonating chamber; the two hide heads and enclosed air column give the drum its deep, carrying bass

Heads

2 (both ends)

Both open ends of the log are covered with animal hide. The hide is soaked in water for several days, then dried in the sun, cut to size, and lashed onto the drum body with strips of skin.

Animal hide (traditionally locally available skin such as goat, deer or cow hide)

Lashed with strips of skin/hide that run along the body and tension both heads

Size Classes

Khuangs are classified by size — khuangpui (large), khuanglai (medium) and khuangte (small); an elongated form is called kawlkhuang.

Frets

The khuang is a rhythm instrument — it has no strings, frets or pitch mechanism. Its language is rhythm, not melody.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The khuang's tone is deep, resonant and carrying. Its heavy bass stroke lends a steady pulse to group dance and communal singing — like the heartbeat of the hills. The large khuangpui projects far, while the small khuangte gives a sharper, quicker rhythm.

Timbre

Warm, woody, full-bodied bass with a broad open resonance from the hollow log

Range

Untuned percussion — two contrasting drum voices (deeper and higher) from the two heads and from different size classes

Dynamic Range

Wide — from a soft ritual pulse to a driving festival beat that anchors an entire dance troupe without amplification

The Listening Guide

To appreciate the khuang, start with the Cheraw bamboo dance — first catch the crisp clap of the bamboo, then find beneath it the khuang's deep bass, holding the whole dance together. Watch Chapchar Kut performances, where dancers in Puanchei costumes move with the drum. Then listen to Mizo church singing — the same khuang becomes the heartbeat of devotion. This is not a solo-instrument experience but the breathing of a community.

Margin Notes

The khuang is not assembled from parts but carved by hollowing a single log of softwood — roughly three feet long, headed with animal hide at both ends. This very simplicity makes it a pure folk instrument.

In the Cheraw bamboo dance all eyes are on the clapping poles and the dancers stepping between them, yet the deep pulse that holds the whole rhythm together belongs to the khuang. Without it, Cheraw's soul is incomplete.

Even after the mass Christianisation of Mizo society the khuang did not disappear — it moved out of old rituals and into church hymn-singing. This very adaptation keeps it an instrument of daily life today.

At one point the traditional craft of making and playing the khuang had begun to wane, but efforts by community and cultural bodies revived it — today it counts among the Northeast's successful stories of cultural preservation.

Questions & Answers
