Overview

The ekkalam is Tamil Nadu's six-foot straight trumpet of brass or copper — a 'natural trumpet' sounded, without any hole or valve, only by the breath of the lips. Its deep, penetrating call, gathering the sanctity of the conch and the intensity of the nadaswaram, has long announced the deity's arrival at temple processions, chariot festivals and celebrations. Once the clarion of victory and the soul of the 'Ekkalakoothu' dance, the instrument is endangered today, yet its breath can still be heard in the rituals of temples such as Srirangam.

(Sushira - wind instruments)

In the instrument classification of the Natya Shastra, the ekkalam belongs to the 'Sushira' (aerophone/wind) category — instruments whose sound arises from the vibration of air blown into a hollow tube. The ekkalam is a 'natural trumpet' with neither finger-holes nor valves; the note is produced entirely by the vibration of the player's lips (embouchure).

Physical

Description English

The ekkalam is a long, straight trumpet of brass or copper, roughly six feet (~1.8 m) in length and about four kilograms in weight. One end is a narrow mouthpiece into which the player blows; the other end flares into a bell from which the sound projects straight outward. For portability it can be dismantled into three or four telescoping sections. It has no finger-holes, keys, or valves.

Body

Long straight cylindrical-to-flared tube ending in a bell

Beaten brass (pital) or copper (tamba)

≈180 (about six feet)

The metal bore itself acts as the resonating column; the flared bell amplifies and directs the sound forward

Sections

3-4

The ekkalam can be separated into three or four telescoping segments for transport and storage, fitted together before playing.

Mouthpiece

Mouthpiece

A narrow metal cup/rim against which the player sets the lips; the buzzing of the lips is the sound source.

Bell

Bell

The flared terminal end that amplifies and throws the sound directionally forward — which is why the ekkalam carries far across an open procession.

Frets

none

The ekkalam has no frets, tone-holes, or valves. Pitch is altered solely by lip tension and breath pressure, so it can sound only a limited set of harmonic-series notes.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The ekkalam's tone is deep, resonant, and penetrating — blending the sacred solemnity of the conch (shankh) with the intensity of the nadaswaram. It is built not for melodic raga-play but for a far-carrying auspicious blast that sets the atmosphere of a temple procession.

Timbre

Brassy, booming, slightly buzzing; commanding at close range and far-reaching in the open air

Range

Limited to a few notes of the natural harmonic series (fundamental drone plus a small number of overtones)

Dynamic Range

Loud to very loud — designed for open-air projection over drums and crowds, not for soft indoor nuance

The Listening Guide

When listening to the ekkalam, do not search for a raga or tune — its power is in its resonance. In a temple-procession video, hear how its long, piercing sustain weaves a divine canopy between the beat of the drum and the sound of the conch. Notice how a single player fills an entire atmosphere from only a few notes, merely by changing breath pressure.

Margin Notes

The ekkalam is a 'natural trumpet' — it has no tone-holes or valves. The note changes only by lip tension and breath pressure, just as in a Western bugle.

Tamil tradition describes the ekkalam's sound as a blend between the solemnity of the conch and the intensity of the nadaswaram — which makes it the ideal auspicious instrument of the temple procession.

Historically the ekkalam was a herald of victory; on winning a battle, kings would have it sounded to proclaim the triumph.

The folk dance 'Ekkalakoothu', performed while playing the ekkalam, was once kept alive by the Thottiya Nayakkar community; today this art-form has all but disappeared.

Questions & Answers
