The dammama is a large, deep-toned kettledrum — a hide stretched over a hemispherical shell of brass or copper, struck with two wooden sticks. In both the naubatkhana of forts and the devta tradition of Himachal it has been the resonant heartbeat of power, faith and festival; before a deity's palanquin its 'dham-dham' still fills the valleys with reverence.

(Avanaddha - membranophone / covered percussion instruments)
In the ancient Indian classification of instruments, the dammama belongs to the 'Avanaddha Vadya' (skin-covered) category — instruments whose sound arises from striking a stretched membrane. It is a large kettledrum: a deep cauldron-shaped metal shell covered on one side with a hide head.

Description English
The dammama is a large, deep-toned kettledrum — a hemispherical metal cauldron over which a goat or buffalo hide is tightly stretched and which is struck with two curved wooden beaters (damangi). Larger than its paired treble kettledrum, it supplies the deep, booming foundational pulse of the ensemble.
Body
Hemispherical cauldron / bowl (broad rim narrowing to a rounded base)
Beaten metal shell — traditionally brass or copper, sometimes iron; humbler folk versions use baked clay
60-90 (bass drum; noticeably larger than the paired nagara/treble kettledrum)
The enclosed metal bowl itself acts as the resonating chamber, projecting a deep, far-carrying bass
Head
Puri (membrane head)
1 (single-headed, covering the open top of the bowl)
Goat or buffalo hide, soaked and stretched over the rim
The struck membrane whose vibration, amplified by the metal bowl, produces the drum's deep voice
Lacing And Tuning
Lacing (rawhide thongs or rope)
The head is bound to the shell with rawhide thongs or heavy rope; tuning is done by tightening or slackening this lacing (and by warming the skin in sun or fire) to deepen or firm the tone.
Beaters
Damangi / Danka (drum sticks)
2
Curved or straight wooden sticks, sometimes with a slight knob at the striking end
Held one in each hand and brought down onto the skin; the large size and low tuning make each stroke a heavy, resonant boom rather than a fast tabla-like articulation
Mounting
In play the dammama rests on the ground, on a wooden stand, or propped before the drummer. In the historic naubat and battlefield tradition, the largest damamas were mounted on the backs of elephants, camels or horses and beaten on the march.
Tonal Character English
The dammama's sound is deep, booming and solemn — a heavy 'dham-dham' that rolls far across valleys and temple courtyards. It is a voice built to summon awe, reverence and grandeur, not to render subtle melodic ornament.
Timbre
Dark, low-pitched, cavernous bass with a long-decaying resonance from the metal bowl
Range
Low, essentially non-melodic (a single deep fundamental); pitch is a texture, not a tune
Dynamic Range
Loud and penetrating by nature — designed to be heard across open ground without amplification; can be muffled for softer ritual passages

To listen to the dammama, attend to its depth — it is rhythm, not melody. First feel the resonance in a single heavy stroke, then pick out its foundational 'dham-dham' beneath the piercing call of karnal and ransingha and the reed of the shehnai. In a recording of a deity's procession, hear how the whole ensemble marches on the gait of this one drum.

Margin Notes
One instrument lives in two worlds — in the naubatkhana of forts it proclaimed royal power, and in the Himalayan hills that same drum today beats the pulse of faith before a deity's palanquin.
In Himachal's tradition the deity's drums are not merely played but venerated — after being newly made or repaired, they are ceremonially received into the deity's band with a reverence akin to consecration.
The dammama is the large, deep-voiced member of the naqqara/nagara family. Europe's 'nakers' and the orchestral 'timpani' are distant cousins of this same bowl-shaped kettledrum.
With no electric amplification, the dammama's metal cauldron carries its deep voice for miles across mountain valleys — which is exactly why it became the ideal instrument of proclamation and war.
Questions & Answers
