Overview

The bihutal is a pair of small bell-metal (kãh) discs cast in Sarthebari, Assam — 'a small kind of patital' — that rings a bright shimmer into the beat of Rongali Bihu alongside the dhol, pepa, gogona and toka. Smaller, lighter and higher-pitched than the heavy Bhortal, it is an instrument not of temple kirtan but of the joy of the village courtyard.

Classification

Natya Shastra Category

घन (Ghana - solid/metal idiophones)

In the Ghana (solid idiophone) category of the Natya Shastra, the bihutal produces sound purely from the collision of its own metal body — without strings, membrane, or air column. Among rhythm instruments it belongs to the concussion-idiophone (struck cymbal) class.

Physical

Description English

The bihutal is a pair of small round bell-metal (kãh) discs cast in Assam, each raised at the centre into a bowl-like boss. It is the light, bright-toned rhythm instrument of Bihu music — smaller, thinner and higher-pitched than the large, heavy Bhortal cymbals.

Body

Two matched circular discs, each with a raised central boss (bowl)

Bell metal (कँह / kãh) — a high-tin bronze alloy of copper and tin (roughly 4:1), the traditional metal of Sarthebari

4-6

None — the disc itself is the resonator; the raised central boss concentrates and sustains the ringing overtone

Components

Description English: The bowl-shaped raised centre of each disc, pierced by a hole; it is the tonal core and the anchor point for the holding cord.
Description English: A cord passed through the hole in the boss; the player grips it to strike or rub the two discs together.
Description English: The thin outer edge whose contact produces the sharp, high 'chhan-chhan' ring.

Weight

Light — unlike the Bhortal (which can range up to several kilograms per pair), the bihutal is kept small and light so it can sustain the fast Bihu tempo without tiring the hands.

Manufacture

Sarthebari in Barpeta district is Assam's renowned bell-metal (kãh) craft town, where artisan families have hand-cast and hammered taal, bhortal and bihutal for generations.

Melting → casting in a mould → hot-hammering to shape → grinding and polishing → tonal pairing (matching the two discs so they ring in tune with each other).

Frets

As a rhythm idiophone the bihutal has no pitches or frets; its role is purely to mark tempo, accent and the cyclical beat (taal).

Sound

Tonal Character English

The bihutal's tone is sharp, bright and high — a glinting 'chhan-chhan' shimmer that lights up the beat between the deep boom of the dhol and the reedy cry of the pepa. Being small and light, its pitch rings higher and quicker than the Bhortal's.

Timbre

Bright, metallic, ringing shimmer with a short-to-medium sustain from the bell-metal alloy

Range

Unpitched idiophone — a single characteristic high ring; not tuned to a scale

Dynamic Range

From soft time-keeping taps to piercing accented clashes that cut through an open-air Bihu ensemble without amplification

Techniques

Description English: Striking the two discs face-to-face for a clear, ringing clash — the basic and most common stroke.
Usage: Marking the main beats (sam and accents) of the Bihu rhythm
Description English: Rubbing the rims against each other to draw out a long, whispering sustained sound that adds flow to the rhythm.
Usage: Connecting phrases and adding shimmer between accented strokes
Description English: Choking the discs against the chest or palm right after a strike to cut the ring short, producing a crisp, tight rhythm.
Usage: Fast, staccato passages in energetic Bihu dance sections
Description English: Swinging the cord-held discs in arcs while playing — a showy technique prized on the Bihu stage for its visual as well as rhythmic effect.
Usage: Display passages and husori/stage performances

The Listening Guide

To hear the bihutal, listen to open-air playing at a Rongali Bihu. First lock onto the deep boom of the dhol, then find the quick, bright 'chhan-chhan' of the bihutal riding above it — that higher ring is what lights up the beat. Notice how it sometimes strikes on every beat, sometimes doubles up, and how its ring sharpens to its brightest at the peak of the dance.

Margin Notes

Assam has a whole family of taal cymbals. The heaviest and most solemn is the Bhortal (of naam-kirtan); its small, light, higher-pitched form is the bihutal, built for Bihu's fast rhythm. Same bell-metal, different size and role.

Sarthebari town in Barpeta district is Assam's largest bell-metal craft centre, where thousands of artisan families have hand-cast and hammered plates, bowls, taal and bihutal for generations.

Assam's diverse tribes have their own names for similar metal cymbals — the Bodo call it 'Jotha', the Karbi 'Sengso' and the Mising 'Lupi' — reflecting a shared rhythmic culture of the Northeast.
