The Monographजीवनी Biography

Harishchandra Bali (10 March 1906 – 24 June 1976) was a classically trained music director in early Hindi cinema, active from the early 1930s through the 1940s. Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, he began his film career as an actor, appearing in productions such as Naqsh-e-Sulemani (1933), Raja Gopichand (1933), and Chhapan Chhuri (1934), before moving into music direction with his debut score for Aurat Ka Dil (1933).
Over the following decade Bali composed music for roughly two dozen films, including Bhikharan (1935), Sarala (1936), Nirala Hindustan (1938), Saubhagya (1940), Mamaji (1942), Apna Ghar (1942), Nari (1942), Mahatma Vidur (1943), and Her Highness (1946).
Bali's most enduring legacy in Indian film history is his role in launching the career of singer-actor K.L. Saigal. A fellow native of Jalandhar, Bali was living in Calcutta alongside music director R.C. Boral of New Theatres when he alerted Boral to Saigal's singing talent — an introduction that set Saigal on the path to becoming one of Hindi cinema's first singing superstars.
