P.C. Barua's Zindagi (1940) at New Theatres, Calcutta — K.L. Saigal paired with Jamuna Barua, music by Pankaj Mullick, and Saigal's timeless lullaby 'So Ja Rajkumari'; Barua's last film for the studio and a farewell to Saigal's Calcutta years.

A Calcutta studio, a familiar pairing

At New Theatres in Calcutta, P.C. Barua shaped Zindagi in 1940. Back on screen was the name that had immortalised Devdas — K.L. Saigal. Opposite him stood Jamuna Barua as Shrimati, a woman fleeing a cruel husband into the life of a vagabond named Ratan. The quiet image of an unmarried couple living together gently unsettled the social codes of its day.

Pankaj Mullick's music and a lullaby

The music was by Pankaj Mullick, the words by Kidar Sharma and Arzu Lucknavi. From this film rose Saigal's tender lullaby 'So Ja Rajkumari' — a slow melody that rocked like a father's lap and went on, for decades, to lull children to sleep in Indian homes. The Bombay Chronicle praised Mullick's 'divine music' and called Saigal's songs 'the soul of melody and pathos.'

A New Theatres farewell

Zindagi became the highest-grossing Indian film of 1940, and a marker of one era at New Theatres. It was Barua's last film for the studio, and among the closing chapters of Saigal's Calcutta years. In December 1941 Saigal left for Bombay to work with Ranjit Movietone — though he would return to New Theatres in 1944 for My Sister.
