On 17 January 1930 Gauhar Jaan died in Mysore — and Indian recorded music's first age formally closed. This is the story of the queen's last journey and of the mass age opening that same year: from the mehfil to the Dandi Ramdhun.

Mysore, 17 January 1930जिस आवाज़ ने 1902 में भारतीय रिकॉर्डिंग का दरवाज़ा खोला था, वह मैसूर के अस्पताल में बुझ गई। गौहर जान — छह सौ से ऊपर तवे, दस से ऊपर ज़बानें, 'माई नेम इज़ गौहर जान!' की वह उद्घोषणा जो इतिहास बन गई — अंतिम बरसों में मुक़दमों से छली, अपनों से ठगी, दरबार की नौकरी में अकेली थीं।

The voice that had opened Indian recording in 1902 went out in a Mysore hospital. Gauhar Jaan — six-hundred-plus sides, ten-plus languages, that ringing 'My name is Gauhar Jaan!' which became history — spent her last years litigated out of her fortune, cheated by intimates, alone in a court appointment.
