स्वदेशी कजरी और ठुमरी तवे — विद्याधरी बाई

“Swadeshi Kajri and Thumri Sides” represents the c. 1924 output of Vidyadhari Bai of Banaras — the Purab ang singer who carried the freedom movement into the kajri, on stage and (in her commercial kajri-thumri sides) on shellac.

Vidyadhari Bai sang the Banaras Purab ang whole — kajri's monsoon sway, thumri's bol-banav, dadra's lilt — with the clear, carrying delivery of a singer used to large gatherings. Her innovation was not in the music but in its aim: the same melodic frame that carried Krishna's name in one verse carried charkha and khadi in the next.

The swadeshi kajri grafted movement vocabulary onto the season-song's old rootstock — Gandhi, jail, videshi cloth entering verses built for clouds and separation. The exact texts she sang are not reliably preserved, which is itself part of the history: this repertoire lived in performance, beneath the notice and sometimes beyond the reach of print and disc.

Among the tawaif singers of the United Provinces who answered Gandhi's call, Vidyadhari Bai of Banaras became the emblem: she took to khadi, sang swadeshi songs at meetings and mehfils alike, and turned her prestige toward the movement's funds. Accounts of the period also describe organised efforts by Banaras tawaifs to align their profession with the national cause. Her commercial records — kajri, thumri, dadra — carried the Banaras style outward even as her movement songs stayed mostly off-disc.

Vidyadhari Bai stands at the head of the nationalist strand in the tawaif tradition — the line that runs to the patriotic records of the 1930s and to modern scholarship on courtesans in the freedom struggle. In Banaras she was honoured into old age as a freedom-movement veteran as much as a musician.
