A social drama exploring the ostracism faced by dancing girls in Indian society, Jeevan Naiya follows Lata, a performer caught between her art and a world that condemns her for it, and Karan, the young man who falls for her against all convention. The film is historically remarkable for the dramatic circumstances of its production — the original lead actor eloped with Devika Rani mid-shoot, halting the film; Ashok Kumar was hurriedly cast as replacement and thus launched one of Hindi cinema's most enduring careers.
Saraswati Devi's score for Jeevan Naiya retained her hallmark blend of light classical and popular melody; the film's standout number 'Koi Humdum Na Raha' became one of the first Hindi film songs to enter the popular memory as a standalone composition.
Screen debut of Ashok Kumar, who would become one of Hindi cinema's defining actors across six decades. The film's backstory — the mid-shoot elopement crisis — is among the most dramatic production anecdotes of the talkie era. Song 'Koi Humdum Na Raha' (sung by Ashok Kumar) was later memorably revived by Kishore Kumar in Jhumroo (1961).
