Love is the most important emotion in human life. It contains both joy and sorrow, hope and disappointment. Indian classical tradition understood all these dimensions of love and divided them into eight types of heroines. These eight heroines provide a complete and comprehensive explanation of love.
Ashtanayika comes from Sanskrit — 'ashta' (eight) and 'nayika' (heroine). These eight heroines are: Vasakasajja, Virahotkanthita, Svadhinabhartruka, Kalahantarita, Khandita, Vipralabdha, Proshitabhartruka, and Abhisarika. Each heroine finds herself in a unique emotional state that comes to every lover at some point in life.

Ashtanayika is not merely a philosophical concept — it is a living part of Indian art, music, and dance. In Ragamala paintings, each heroine is depicted with a different raag. In classical dances like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi, Ashtanayika's performance is an important element. In music, every raag especially expresses certain heroines — Bhairavi for Virahotkanthita, Yaman for Vasakasajja.
Hindi cinema has also kept Ashtanayika tradition alive. In every love film, some of these eight heroines can be found. From ancient times to today, this tradition has remained a universal way of understanding human nature.
