ज़ालिम तेरे अंदाज़ ने

One of the six Neelam songs with no recorded singer. The title is a fragment — the sentence breaks off before the verb — and what survives is the accusation and its cause: the beloved's andaz, their bearing or manner. Lyrics by C. M. Hunar, music by Khan Mastana, like every song in the film.

No audio of the song has been located and nothing is asserted here about how it was actually set. In the idiom the title belongs to, a zaalim address is normally given a medium tempo and a slightly teasing lift rather than a lament's slowness, because the accusation is a form of flirtation and the music has to carry the joke as well as the wound.

Zaalim — tyrant, cruel one — is the standard Urdu form of address to the beloved, and the convention is entirely affectionate: the cruelty in question is beauty's indifference, and calling it tyranny is a compliment dressed as a grievance. Hunar's specific charge is andaz, not the face or the eyes, which is a slightly more interesting choice; andaz is style, the way a person carries themselves, and blaming it puts the damage down to something the beloved does rather than something they simply are. That shifts a fraction of the responsibility onto them, which is exactly the small argumentative turn this kind of couplet exists to make.

Neelam (1945) was a social picture from A. H. Productions, Bombay, directed by Ahmed Essa, with all nine songs written by C. M. Hunar and composed by Khan Mastana. The cast was led by Harish and Meena, with Jagdish Sethi, Yashodhara Katju, Kanhaiyalal, Kalyani, Satyarani, Mehdi Raza, Sayani and Abdul Hussain in support. No plot summary of the film survives anywhere, and no print is known to circulate; the songs were issued on the indigenous Young India label rather than on HMV, and it is those shellac discs that carried the film's music into the present.

Nothing of this song survives beyond its entry in the catalogues: no disc has been documented, no recording has been transferred, and the film itself is lost. It is recorded here with its two certain credits and an empty singer field, which is the accurate state of knowledge rather than a placeholder. Should a Young India label scan or an audio transfer ever surface — as happened with two other Neelam songs around 2018 — the gap can be filled from evidence.
