Overview

Manna Dey's second song in Prabhu Ka Ghar (1945), and one of the five numbers credited to Bulo C. Rani; hindigeetmala carries it under the short title 'Tum Naath Ho', myswar under the fuller 'Tum Nath Ho Phir Main Anaath Kyon'. Pandit Indra wrote the words. Where the film's other Manna Dey song states the Gita's promise of divine intervention, this one puts the question back: if the assurance holds, why does the speaker find himself without it. Together the two frame the film's title as a proposition to be argued rather than a setting.

The Music

Bulo C. Rani takes sole credit, which places this among the small identifiable body of his work from the first two years after Pagli Duniya (1944). A bhajan of complaint is normally set slow, in the middle of the male register, with the melodic weight falling on the turn of the question rather than on a refrain — the form depends on the listener hearing the argument, not the tune. Manna Dey, whose classical training made him the studio's obvious choice for devotional material even this early, is the voice. No recording is available and the arrangement is undocumented.

The Poetry

The line turns on a single etymological hinge that is impossible to reproduce in English: 'nath' is lord, master, protector; 'anath' is its own negation, the word for an orphan, one who has no nath. So 'tum nath ho, phir main anath kyon' is not two ideas but one word held against itself — you are the protector, so how is it that I am the unprotected. This is bhakti's oldest rhetorical move, the devotee arguing with God from inside faith rather than outside it, and it is a device Hindi and Braj devotional poets have used for centuries. Pandit Indra builds the entire song on it, and by doing so ties it directly to the film's title: if this is the Lord's house, the speaker is asking why it does not feel like one.

The Story

Prabhu Ka Ghar was a 1945 Ranjit Movietone social-religious drama directed by Wajahat Mirza. With no surviving print and no traceable plot summary, the eleven-song list is the only real evidence of the picture's shape, and the pairing of this song with 'Paritranaye Sadhunan' in the same voice is the strongest single piece of it: a film that puts both the Gita's promise and the complaint against it into the score is organised around that tension rather than merely decorated with devotion.

The Legacy

No recording has been traced and the song has never been reissued or written about; it survives in the song catalogues and Saregama's listing for the album. Its value is as evidence of two things at once — the kind of material a young Manna Dey was being given in 1945, five years before Mashaal, and the range Bulo C. Rani was working in during his first independent years at Ranjit.

Margin Notes

The title turns on the pair nath / anath — 'lord, protector' and its own negation, the ordinary Hindi word for an orphan — so the whole complaint is contained in one word set against itself.

Manna Dey's two songs in the film are placed as a pair: 'Paritranaye Sadhunan' states the Gita's promise that the divine takes birth in every age, and this one asks why the promise has not reached the speaker.
