Overview

Listed by HindiGeetMala as 'Tum Haar Gayi Aaj' and by Saregama in the fuller form that adds the second half of the line, this is the one number in Meghdoot whose title is openly playful — the vocabulary of winning and losing that Hindi love songs borrow from games and wagers to keep a quarrel affectionate. No singer credit survives; the film's lyricists are recorded only as a trio.

The Music

Saregama's reissue times it at 2:32, among the shortest tracks on the album — the length of a single well-turned idea. Kamal Dasgupta's Meghdoot writing is uniformly light-classical in texture, with the voice forward and the accompaniment small, so a teasing number here would take its lift from the melodic phrasing rather than from any percussive push.

The Poetry

Framing love as a contest with a winner is one of the friendliest devices in the Hindi film lyric: it lets a song stage conflict without stakes, and it gives both parties something to do beyond longing. The claim of victory is almost always ironic — the winner in these songs has usually won by surrendering — and the pleasure is in the accounting rather than the outcome. Against the rest of Meghdoot's score, which is organised around distance and message-sending, this song is the film's one moment of ordinary domestic warmth.

The Story

Meghdoot was Debaki Bose's adaptation of Kalidasa's Meghadutam for Kirti Pictures, released in October 1945 with Shahu Modak and Leela Desai in the leads. Kamal Dasgupta — a composer who spent almost his whole career inside HMV's Calcutta studio rather than in Bombay — wrote the eleven documented songs, and the film's three credited lyricists, Faiyyaz Hashmi, Gauddas and Pandit Narottam Vyas, are listed together at film level in the catalogues rather than song by song.

The Legacy

The song survives on Saregama's 2017 digital reissue. It never had a life on the gramophone market of its own — the record that carried Meghdoot out into the country was Jagmohan Sursagar's 'O Varsha Ke Pehle Baadal' — but it is part of the only complete artefact of the film that still exists, since no print of Meghdoot is known to circulate.
