The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Tu Sun Le Kahani' — 'you, listen to the story' — is one of the seven Kanan Devi solos on the Ban Phool soundtrack. The imperative in the title puts the song into the narrating mode that Hindi cinema used constantly in the 1940s: a character stops the action to tell her own history, or someone else's, in verse. Dhiren Mitra composed the music; the words are credited to Pandit Madhur in the Hindi Geet Mala listing of the film. Nothing further about the song's placement in the film has been documented.
The Music

The recording is not in public circulation and no description of its music exists in the sources consulted, so nothing is claimed here about its melody, tempo or scoring. The one thing the album's shape tells us is how Dhiren Mitra distributed his material: seven of nine songs to a single voice, with the two remaining given to a male singer and a second woman. A composer working that way is writing a role rather than a set of numbers, and 'Tu Sun Le Kahani' — a narrating song — is the kind of item that usually anchors such a sequence.
The Poetry

'Kahani' in film-song usage rarely means a story with events; it means a life summarised as a grievance or a lesson. The construction here is doubly marked — 'tu' (the intimate, unhonoured second person) and the imperative 'sun le' (listen, and be done with it) — which together suggest an address downward or inward rather than a plea to a superior. That register belongs to the confiding songs of the period: a woman telling a child, a servant, a companion, or her own reflection what has happened to her, on the understanding that nothing can now be changed by the telling. It is a form that lets a film deliver exposition and emotion in the same three minutes.
The Story

Ban Phool was directed by Niren Lahiri for P. R. Productions of Calcutta, produced by P.N. Roy and written by Pranab Roy, with Kanan Devi as Champa. The cast around her — a zamindar, an aunt, a chacha, a Kazi Saheb, a girl called Maina — describes a village social drama, the genre Wikipedia's 1945 filmography assigns it. But no plot summary has been preserved: IMDb's entry for the film carries none, and the Encyclopaedia-derived listing on indiancine.ma gives only credits. Which character speaks this 'kahani', and to whom, is therefore not recoverable.
The Legacy

The song has left no recorded afterlife: no reissue, no anthology appearance, no commentary. What it documents is the working method of a whole layer of 1940s production that has since become invisible — Hindi films made in Calcutta studios by Bengali units for a national market, whose films are gone and whose songs exist as titles in a catalogue. Ban Phool's nine titles are, in that sense, the film itself.

Ban Phool is listed as a 'Social' in the Wikipedia filmography of Hindi films of 1945 — the industry's own label for contemporary domestic drama, as opposed to mythologicals, historicals and stunt films.
