The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Tod Na Dena Dil Jod Ke' is the duet that carries the romance of Albeli (1945): Zeenat Begum and the film's hero Satish alternate and then join on a refrain that asks the beloved not to break a heart he has already joined to his own, and not to turn his face away. It is the best-preserved number of G. A. Chishti's twelve-song score for the film - the recording circulates, and the lyric is credited to Shanti Swarup 'Kaif', the only writer documented for any Albeli song.
The Music

The song is built on the simplest and most durable device available to a 1940s duet: a refrain whose two halves are exchanged between the voices before both sing it together, with the closing phrase repeated in a short call-and-answer that lets the pair overlap. Chishti keeps the melody inside a narrow, conversational range and lets the dholak carry the movement, so nothing competes with the words. The antaras rise a step above the refrain and then fall back into it, the standard mukhda-antara arch, and the male voice - an actor's rather than a trained playback singer's - is deliberately left plainer than Zeenat Begum's, which gives the duet its texture.
The Poetry

Shanti Swarup 'Kaif' writes the song as a warning rather than a request. Its governing image is the pair of verbs at either end of the title - to join and to break - so that the act of falling in love is already presented as something that can be undone, and the refrain simply asks that it not be. The antaras answer that anxiety with assertions of union: one life between the two of them, one body and mind, both equally out of their senses with love; and then a second stanza about keeping faith with the code of love and turning a defeat into a victory. The vocabulary is plain Hindustani with none of the Persianate ornament a Bombay lyricist might have reached for, which suits a film whose lovers are a street girl and a gypsy.
The Story

Arunkumar Deshmukh, who has written up several of Albeli's surviving recordings from Geet Kosh data, identifies this duet as sung by Zeenat Begum with Satish, the film's hero, and notes that almost nothing is known about Satish beyond a filmography of twenty-four pictures between 1939 and 1959 and some thirty-three songs in twenty-two of them. Albeli (1945) was made by Talwar Productions of Calcutta and directed by the company's proprietor R. C. Talwar, who also wrote the story; J. S. Casshyap supplied the screenplay and dialogue. Shooting began in Lahore and was completed in Calcutta, and the picture opened at the Central Cinema in Bombay on 22 December 1945. The plot follows a street girl in love with a gypsy boy who is wanted by two other young women as well; Ramola headed a cast that included the actor-singer Satish, Rooplekha, Manorama, Usha, Sunder and Hiralal. G. A. Chishti composed all twelve songs, and Baburao Patel's filmindia gave the film a hostile notice in its March 1946 issue.
The Legacy

The song's survival is the point of it now. Albeli made no mark in 1945 and its composer left India four years later, so the handful of its recordings that have been recovered - this one among the most complete, with a full transcription published in 2026 - are the main evidence of what G. A. Chishti sounded like before Pakistan made him famous. Heard beside the Punjabi film songs he wrote in Lahore after 1949, the duet shows how little his method changed across the border: the same short refrain, the same reliance on a memorable phrase repeated rather than developed.

The Hindi Film Geet Kosh lists twelve songs for Albeli but attaches no singer and no lyricist to any single one of them, an unusually blank entry that has left the film's per-song credits open ever since.

Albeli was the fourth and last Hindi film R. C. Talwar and G. A. Chishti made together, after Khamoshi, Manchali (1943) and Shukriya (1944); their partnership had begun with the Punjabi Pardesi Dhola in 1941.

Zeenat Begum was about fourteen when Albeli was released. She had made her debut in the Lahore-made Punjabi film Mangti in 1942 and, after Partition, spent decades as a mainstay of Radio Pakistan's Lahore station.
