Overview

One of the four songs of Ghar (1945) that have come down to us as a credit and a recording, with no text attached. The record is clear on who made it: Rajkumari and Afzal Lahori sing it as a duet, Roopbani wrote it and Alla Rakha set it, and both MySwar and Saregama preserve a longer form of the title. But no lyric text has ever been published and no source consulted has described the recording, so what the song actually said cannot be reported. This page records what is documented and declines to fill in the rest.

The Music

The recording survives — Saregama still sells it — but no source consulted has described, notated or transcribed it, and it is not among the Ghar songs whose text the archives have printed, so its melody, metre and scoring are not characterised here. What can be said is the company it kept: it is one of eight songs Alla Rakha wrote for Ghar early in the film career he ran under the name A. R. Qureshi, alongside two widow's laments, a celebratory Amirbai Karnataki solo and a duet the composer sang himself.

The Poetry

The lyric is lost. HindiGeetMala carries the song's entry but states plainly that its words have not been recovered, and no other archive consulted has published them, so nothing can be said about Roopbani's imagery, structure or argument here. The title is a conventional Hindi film formula — an address to the sajan, the beloved, asking him to come — and the fact that the song is sung by two voices rather than one is documented. It would be easy to build a reading out of those two facts, and that reading is exactly what this entry withholds.

The Story

Ghar was a Sunrise Pictures family drama directed by V. M. Vyas, the third film in five years in which Vyas built a picture around the Hindi word for home. No print, press book or contemporary synopsis survives, and this song is not among the four whose texts do, so it cannot be placed within the story. Its two singers, Rajkumari and Afzal Lahori, sing one other duet in the film, which suggests the pair had a running thread in it; that inference is not evidence, and no source states it.

The Legacy

This song's afterlife is a catalogue entry and a track for sale that nobody writes about, which is the ordinary fate of most Hindi film music of the 1940s and worth stating plainly rather than dressing up. It is preserved here because the credit itself is information: it fixes Rajkumari and Afzal Lahori as a working duet pair on an Alla Rakha score in 1945, and it keeps the film's song count honest at eight rather than at the four for which better material happens to exist.

Margin Notes

MySwar lists this song under the longer title 'Sajaniya Chale Aao Dheere Dheere'; HindiGeetMala carries the shorter form. Neither has published the lyric.

All eight songs of Ghar are still sold by Saregama, but only four of the eight lyric texts have ever been printed by the song archives. This is one of the four with no published text.
