The Monographपरिचय Overview

At 3:29 on Saregama's reissue this is the longest song in Meghdoot after 'O Varsha Ke Pehle Baadal', and its title reads like a vow rather than a mood: love has become a path, and the two of them are on it. The playback singers are not named in any surviving catalogue — Saregama's reissue lists the track under the character names 'Yaksh & Priya' instead — and the lyricist is recorded only at film level.
The Music

Its length on the reissue suggests a song with more than the usual two verses, or one with a developed instrumental return between them — either way it is one of the two places on this album where Kamal Dasgupta allowed himself room. The score's default texture holds: voice carried well forward of a small ensemble, in the light-classical manner he had built at HMV Calcutta rather than the fuller orchestration then standard in Bombay.
The Poetry

Turning love into a path — prem ka path — is the move by which a Hindi lyric converts feeling into obligation: a road is something you are already on, that has a direction, and that you can only leave by breaking faith. The construction 'ab hum dono ko' makes it explicitly mutual and explicitly future-facing, which inside a Meghadutam adaptation is loaded, because the story's whole engine is that the two of them are about to be separated by a year of exile. A vow of shared road made just before the road divides is the kind of irony the film's source material is built on.
The Story

Meghdoot was Debaki Bose's adaptation of Kalidasa's Meghadutam for Kirti Pictures, released in October 1945 with Shahu Modak and Leela Desai in the leads. Kamal Dasgupta — a composer who spent almost his whole career inside HMV's Calcutta studio rather than in Bombay — wrote the eleven documented songs, and the film's three credited lyricists, Faiyyaz Hashmi, Gauddas and Pandit Narottam Vyas, are listed together at film level in the catalogues rather than song by song.
The Legacy

The song is preserved on Saregama's 2017 digital reissue and nowhere else that we could locate. Its main documentary interest is the credit line: it is one of four tracks on the reissue attributed to characters instead of singers, the clearest evidence that whoever prepared that release was working from picturisation notes rather than from recording-sheet credits.
