Overview

'Pardes Mein Jane Wale' is an Amirbai Karnataki solo from Chand Tara (1945), composed by Gyan Dutt to lyrics by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. The title is a vocative — it addresses, directly, the one who is going away — and it places the song in the enormous North Indian tradition of viraha, the poetry of separation caused by a man's departure for work, war or trade. The film survives only as a credit list, so nothing is known about who sings this to whom on screen, but the title alone identifies the song's function within the picture: it is the point at which the story separates two people.

The Music

A pardes song is written for the singer's lower and middle register rather than for display, because the emotion it carries is endurance rather than intensity — the composer's task is to sustain a line long enough to sound like waiting. Gyan Dutt's instrument for this was the sarangi, whose sympathetic strings continue sounding after the bow has moved on and which, more than any other instrument in the north Indian orchestra, imitates the fall of a voice. Amirbai Karnataki's tone, hard-edged in her rhythmic numbers, was capable of considerable weight held low, which is why she was cast so often in both registers within the same film.

The Poetry

Pardes is not simply 'abroad'. In the folk vocabulary of the Gangetic plain it means anywhere beyond the reach of one's own village and kin — the mill town, the plantation, the recruiting depot — and by the 1940s the word had absorbed a century of labour migration into it. The women's songs that grew around that migration are among the most numerous in North Indian folk music, and they are almost always addressed rather than described: the singer speaks to the departing man as though he could still turn around. Swami Ramanand Saraswati's title reproduces that grammar exactly, and in doing so borrows the whole weight of the folk form for a film song.

The Story

This is one of the two Chand Tara songs — with 'Jhanan Mori Baje Payaliya' — that later reference writing on lyricist Swami Ramanand Saraswati singles out when listing his work, which suggests it was among the film's better-known numbers at the time. Saraswati's documented filmography is small: Aabroo (1943) and Rekha (1943), Badi Baat (1944), Chand Tara and Tadbir (1945), Sohni Mahiwal (1946) and Parda (1949). Tadbir, released the same year as Chand Tara, carried songs sung by K.L. Saigal, which places Saraswati briefly in the company of the biggest singing star of the decade.

The Legacy

No commercial reissue of the recording is known and the song has no presence in later compilations. What it does have is a small, real place in the documentation of its lyricist: in the sparse record of Swami Ramanand Saraswati's career, Chand Tara is cited by name and this song by title, which is more than most of his work retains. For Amirbai Karnataki it is one entry among hundreds, but it belongs to the stretch before 1947, the years her Wikipedia biography describes as her career peak.

Margin Notes

Reference writing on lyricist Swami Ramanand Saraswati names 'Pardes Me Jane Wale' and 'Jhanan Mori Baje Payaliya' as the Chand Tara songs associated with him; his documented filmography is small — seven films between 1943 and 1949 — but he wrote all ten Chand Tara songs himself.
