Overview

The title is the whole of the surviving lyric: an address to the meet — the companion, the beloved of the heart — asking them to come and sing sweet songs together. It is the second of Adhar's two duets credited to Geeta Roy with the composer S. N. Tripathi, and like the rest of the film's score it exists now only as a catalogue line. HindiGeetMala lists the song under Geeta Dutt's name alone; MySwar's BollySwar compendium credits both voices.

The Music

The recording is not in circulation and its arrangement cannot be described. The credits fix only the ensemble — a male and a female voice, with S. N. Tripathi singing his own composition, which he did routinely in this period rather than as an exception.

The Poetry

M. A. Razi opens on the word meet — a Hindi term for the companion of the heart that carries none of the courtly distance of the Urdu mehboob, and that Hindi film lyricists reached for when they wanted intimacy without formality. The line then does something the 1940s film song did often: it makes singing itself the subject, proposing shared song as the form the meeting will take. That self-reference is a convention of the period, and in a film built around a composer-singer it would have been an easy and natural opening.

The Story

Adhar (1945), also catalogued as Aadhaar, was a 'social' produced by Geeta Pictures, Bombay, and directed by Ramanlal Lalbhai Desai, with S. N. Tripathi composing to lyrics by M. A. Razi. Umakant Desai played the hero opposite an actress billed only as Kokila, with Yakub, Shahzadi, Firoza, Usha and others in support. No print circulates and no plot summary survives, so the placement of any individual song within the narrative is unrecoverable; the Hindi Film Geet Kosh listing and the Columbia record labels are effectively the whole surviving record of the film.

The Legacy

Like the film's other duet, this song survives chiefly as evidence in an unresolved question of dating: the credit to Geeta Roy would place her first film recordings in 1945 rather than 1946. Beyond that, there is no documented reception, no chart or radio history, and no known audio. It is one of the many entries in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh that keep a title alive without keeping the song.

Margin Notes

HindiGeetMala credits this song to Geeta Dutt alone, while MySwar's BollySwar compendium credits Geeta Roy together with S. N. Tripathi — a discrepancy typical of song listings for films whose records have not been re-examined in decades.

S. N. Tripathi sang as well as composed and acted; he is best remembered on screen as Hanuman in mythological films such as Shri Ram Bhakta Hanuman (1948).
