The Monographपरिचय Overview

Of the seven Kanan Devi solos in Ban Phool this is the one that speaks most directly to the film's title. The malan — the flower-seller, the gardener's wife — is a stock confidante of Hindi and Urdu song, the woman who moves between houses with her basket and therefore knows things, and 'Malan Bata De' places the singer in the position of asking her. In a film called Ban Phool ('wild flower') whose heroine is named Champa, the choice of interlocutor is not incidental. Dhiren Mitra composed; the lyric is credited to Pandit Madhur.
The Music

No audio of this number was traceable, so its setting cannot be described without invention. The one structural observation the catalogue permits is about placement rather than notes: a song addressed to a malan belongs to the domestic-folk end of the film-song spectrum rather than to the drawing-room ghazal end, and composers of the 1940s generally treated that register with dholak-led rhythm and a short, repeatable melodic phrase built for a woman's working voice. Whether Dhiren Mitra did so here is not recorded, and it is flagged as unverified rather than asserted.
The Poetry

The malan is one of the small cast of figures Hindi film lyric inherited from folk and thumri practice — alongside the sakhi, the panihari and the bird-messenger — whose function is to receive a confidence the heroine cannot address to its actual object. She is socially beneath the household and physically inside it, which is exactly the combination that makes her safe to talk to. Asking her to 'tell' (bata de) casts her as an oracle of ordinary knowledge: she has seen the other house, the other face, the flower that was bought and for whom. In a film organised around a flower-named girl and a zamindar's household, a lyric that routes the heroine's question through a flower-seller is doing quiet structural work as well as sentimental work.
The Story

The surviving credits give Kanan Devi the role of Champa in a village world that includes a zamindar (Devi Mukherjee as Narendra), his dependants, an aunt figure (Devbala as Mausi), a girl called Maina (Bijoli) and a Kazi Saheb (Hiralal). No plot summary of Ban Phool survives in any filmography or database consulted, so the scene this song belongs to is unknown; the character names are the only narrative evidence the record preserves. Niren Lahiri directed from a script by Pranab Roy for P. R. Productions, Calcutta.
The Legacy

'Malan Bata De' has not been reissued or anthologised, and it survives as a catalogue line. Its value now is as a small piece of evidence about how a 1945 Hindi film made entirely in Bengal reached for the north Indian lyric commonplaces its Hindi audience expected — the malan, the chaman, Phagun, Sawan — and how naturally a Bengali composer and a Hindi lyricist could assemble that vocabulary for a Calcutta production aimed at Bombay's market.

Margin Notes

The film's title, Ban Phool, means a flower that grows wild and untended; its heroine, played by Kanan Devi, is named Champa — itself a flower name.

The malan, the sakhi and the panihari are among the stock confidante-figures Hindi film songwriting took over from folk song and thumri, all of them devices for voicing what a heroine cannot say directly.
