Overview

'Koi Hamein Bata De' — 'let somebody tell us' — is a Kanan Devi solo from the Ban Phool soundtrack and the second of the film's two songs built around a request for information; the other is 'Malan Bata De'. The difference between them is the addressee. 'Malan Bata De' asks a specific woman who is assumed to know; this one asks koi — anyone at all — which is the grammar of having no one left to ask. Dhiren Mitra composed the score; Pandit Madhur is the credited lyricist.

The Music

The music of this number is undocumented — no recording in public circulation, no notation, no review — so it is left undescribed rather than reconstructed. The one observation the album supports is that Dhiren Mitra was writing a sequence with internal rhymes of subject as well as of sound: two questioning songs, a Phagun song and a Sawan song, a story song and a consolation song. That is the shape of a score designed around one performer's emotional arc rather than around a set of separately saleable records.

The Poetry

Hindi film lyric has a long habit of the unanswerable question — koi bata de, koi to kahe, kaun kahe — and it works because the question is not really seeking information. What it seeks is a witness. The plural 'hamein' rather than 'mujhe' is the other move worth noticing: the courteous first-person plural puts a small formal distance between the singer and her own distress, which is exactly the distance that lets a screen heroine complain in public without appearing to complain. Both devices are conventional; both are doing the work of making private feeling performable.

The Story

Ban Phool's story has not been preserved in summary form anywhere consulted, so the situation prompting this question is unknown. The evidence that does survive is the cast and its role names: Kanan Devi as Champa, Krishnakant as Kishore, Devi Mukherjee as the zamindar Narendra, Ahindra Choudhury as Ramlal, Rajmohan as Ramesh Chacha, Shyam Laha as Bhudhu, Devbala as Mausi, Bijoli as Maina and Hiralal as Kazi Saheb. The film was directed by Niren Lahiri and produced by P.N. Roy for P. R. Productions, Calcutta.

The Legacy

No reissue, no anthology, no commentary: the song exists as an entry in a catalogue of 1945 releases. Its documentary value is that it belongs to a nine-song set which is now the most complete surviving artefact of the film — Ban Phool's record listing outlives its plot, its prints and its reviews.

Margin Notes

Ban Phool contains two 'bata de' songs — 'Malan Bata De' and 'Koi Hamein Bata De' — both sung by Kanan Devi, an unusual doubling within a nine-song score.

Kanan Devi sang for the film's soundtrack in the same year she filed for divorce from Ashok Maitra, the marriage that had first given her social respectability outside the film industry.
