Overview

'Jam Jam Rahe Meharban Mere Allah Mian' is the one song of Dharm (1945) whose musical register is actually documented: catalogue listings classify it as filmi qawwali with a Sufi inflection, which makes it the album's devotional number. It is credited to Rattan Bai, who also appears in the film's cast — the Hindi Film Geet Kosh adds unnamed other voices beside her, which agrees with MySwar's note that several female voices are audible although only she was credited. Music is by Sajjad Hussain and HFGK gives the lyric to Shewan Rizvi. The title is a plain, colloquial blessing rather than a formal invocation — jam jam is an everyday intensifier, closer to 'always and abundantly' than to any liturgical formula — addressed directly to God as mere Allah mian, 'my dear Lord'. No recording of it has been located.

The Music

The catalogue tag 'Sufi/Qawwali' is the only description of this song's music that rests on a source rather than on inference, and it is worth taking seriously: a qawwali written for a woman's solo voice was not the standard form in 1945, when the mode was still associated on screen with male ensembles. What the film qawwali of the period shared was a driving handclap-and-dholak pulse, a repeated refrain built for congregational answer, and a melodic line that returns obsessively to one phrase. How Sajjad Hussain — a composer whose Hindustani classical grounding was joined to a taste for Middle Eastern instrumental colour — handled that form here cannot be known without the record, and this entry does not pretend otherwise.

The Poetry

No text of the song survives in any accessible source and none is stored here. What the title carries, though, is a particular tone. Devotional film verse of the 1940s usually reached for a raised diction — Urdu of the ghazal, or Sanskritised Hindi of the bhajan. This line does the opposite: jam jam is street Hindustani, the word you use when telling someone to go ahead and do a thing freely, and mian attached to Allah turns the address into something close to household affection. Read together, the title is not supplication but gratitude spoken plainly — a wish that the divine kindness already being received should simply continue. That informality is the single most interesting thing the surviving record tells us about this lyric.

The Story

Dharm was directed by Ramnik Desai for Star Productions and released in 1945, one of some dozens of 'socials' that filled Bombay's wartime release calendar. Its cast list — E. Billimoria, Leela Pande, Madhuri, Maya Devi, Jamshedji, Ismail, G. Mohammed, Kumar, Premi and Rattan Bai — is all that survives of the production alongside the song titles. Rattan Bai, by 1945, was near the end of a screen career that had begun in Calcutta twelve years earlier; Dharm and Shri Krishn Arjun Yuddha, both 1945, are among her last credits. The MySwar listing for this particular record adds one detail no other source preserves: several female voices are audible on it, though only she was credited.

The Legacy

Of Dharm's documented songs this is the one with the clearest claim on later interest, because a woman's solo qawwali from 1945 is a genuinely unusual object — the form's screen history is overwhelmingly male and ensemble-based until much later. But the claim is unrealised: no pressing has surfaced, no compilation includes it, and the song is not cited in any of the standard accounts of the film qawwali. It survives as a classification in a database. Its one afterlife is as evidence in the reconstruction of Dharm's soundtrack itself, where it is one of the seven titles that three independent sources agree on, against the eight that were mistakenly imported from Din Raat (1945).

Margin Notes

The MySwar/BollySwar listing for this record carries a note that several female voices are audible on it although only Rattan Bai was credited — the kind of uncredited chorus work that was routine on 1940s film discs.

Rattan Bai appears in Dharm's cast list and sings on four of its eight documented records — the ordinary arrangement of an era in which screen performers still recorded their own songs. She had been acting since New Theatres' Yahudi Ki Ladki (1933) and had turned producer with Saheli in 1942.

Sajjad Hussain, who composed this song, was a session mandolinist reputed to have played on more than 22,000 recordings across the industry, and had mastered sitar, veena, violin, flute and piano before he ever wrote a score under his own name.
