The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Jeevan Ki Dor' is one of the four Dharm (1945) sides Rattan Bai sings on. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh credits it to her with unnamed other voices rather than as a solo, and gives the lyric to Baalam Pardesi; Sajjad Hussain composed it. The image in the title — the thread or cord of life — is one of the oldest in Indian devotional and philosophical verse, where a life is a strand held, spun, tangled or cut by a hand that is not one's own. In a film named Dharm, it reads as the album's most direct statement of theme. No recording of the song has been found and the film is not known to survive.
The Music

This side has not been located, so its music is undocumented and this entry records no tempo, raag or taal for it rather than inventing any. The composer's practice is the only usable frame. Sajjad Hussain's music is described as joining Hindustani classical material to instrumentation with a Middle Eastern cast — a combination that in the mid-1940s meant classical phrase-shapes carried by an orchestra of strings, harmonium and light percussion rather than by a traditional accompanying ensemble. Rattan Bai's singing came out of the same pre-playback world, where the actress's own voice, unamplified in training if not in recording, had to carry a whole song without editing. What that produced on this particular disc is unknown.
The Poetry

No lyric text has survived in any accessible source, and none would be quoted here regardless. The title's metaphor is worth taking seriously on its own, because it is not a neutral one. Dor is a held thread — the word used for a kite string as much as for a bond of relation — and the phrase jeevan ki dor therefore carries the idea of a life that someone else is holding: fate, God, or duty. That is a very different proposition from the Western 'thread of life' cut by the Fates; here the emphasis falls on the holding rather than the cutting, on obligation rather than mortality. For a 1945 social called Dharm, that is the natural register of its serious song.
The Story

Dharm, a Star Productions social directed by Ramnik Desai, is one of the 1945 releases for which no plot record of any kind has been traced — no synopsis, no review, no censor summary. Its documented cast is E. Billimoria, Leela Pande, Madhuri, Maya Devi, Jamshedji, Ismail, G. Mohammed, Kumar, Premi and Rattan Bai. Rattan Bai's three solos and one duet make her the dominant voice of the album; by 1945 she had been working in films for twelve years, since New Theatres' Yahudi Ki Ladki (1933), and she also composed and sang bhajans privately, sharing them among friends at Maha Shivaratri. Which character sings 'Jeevan Ki Dor', and at what point in the story, is not recorded.
The Legacy

Like the rest of Dharm's album, this song had no commercial afterlife: it was not a hit, has not been reissued, and appears in no anthology of 1940s film music. Its significance is contextual. It belongs to the earliest phase of a composer whom Lata Mangeshkar would later name her favourite, and it is one of only about seventeen film scores Sajjad Hussain completed in thirty-four years, which makes even his unheard songs part of a small and closely watched body of work. It is also one of the seven catalogued titles verified as genuinely Dharm's, against the eight Din Raat (1945) songs that online listings have folded into this film's soundtrack.

Every documented singer on the Dharm soundtrack is a woman — Rattan Bai, the artist credited only as Naseem, and Alaknanda. No male playback voice appears anywhere in the film's documented track list, which was unusual even in 1945.

Lata Mangeshkar, who began singing for Sajjad Hussain some years after Dharm, named him her favourite composer in a 2012 interview — a striking judgement on a man whose entire filmography is smaller than a single year's output for most of his contemporaries.
