जाओ वीर रण में

'Jaao Veer Rann Mein' is the fifth song on the Parinde (1945) record listing. Both HindiGeetMala and MySwar carry the title and attribute the words to Rammurti Chaturvedi and the music to Gobind Ram, and neither names a singer for it — so no singer is recorded here. It is also the one gap in the surviving audio: the Hamraaz-linked collectors' page for this film hosts the other seven tracks, numbered 1 to 8, with number 5 simply missing. That makes this the least recoverable song of a film whose print is itself damaged.

Nothing can honestly be said about how this song sounds, because no copy of it is in circulation: it is absent from the only archive that carries Parinde's audio, and the film's surviving print is cut and in places soundless. What the listings do fix is its authorship — Pandit Gobind Ram composing, in the year he was also scoring Laila Majnu and Hamara Sansar. Where the record listing places it, between the parting duet and the waiting song, is the film's war stretch, and the other songs of that stretch are the exhortatory and devotional ones rather than the romantic ones. Beyond that placement, any description of its melody, rhythm or orchestration would be invention, so none is offered.

The title is a straight imperative — an address to a warrior, sending him to the field. Rann is the old Sanskritic word for the battleground, carrying the weight of epic combat rather than of a modern war, and veer is the hero of that same register. Putting those two words at the head of a song in a 1945 film about the Burma campaign does a particular piece of work: it lets a contemporary enlistment be heard in the vocabulary of an ancient one, which is how a great deal of wartime Hindi film verse managed to be stirring without being political. Rammurti Chaturvedi, who wrote all eight songs here and in the same year wrote for K. Asif's Phool, worked comfortably in both idioms. The full text of the song has not survived in any accessible source, so nothing more can be said about how the rest of it develops.

Parinde turns on a schoolteacher, Ashok, who is the son of a soldier killed in service and who eventually enlists and trains as a pilot before being posted to the Burma frontier. A song built on sending a warrior into battle belongs somewhere in that movement — the recruitment drives, the enlistment, the departure — but the picturisation of this particular number is not documented anywhere, and the print from which the film's plot was reconstructed is missing whole passages. Where exactly it fell in the finished film is therefore unknown, and is left unstated rather than guessed.

The song has no afterlife to speak of. Of Parinde's eight songs, the only ones that have drawn any attention at all are the four posted on Atul's Song A Day and Zohrabai Ambalewali's prayer, 'Doobte Bharat Ko Bachao, Mere Kartaar'. 'Jaao Veer Rann Mein' has neither an audio copy nor a named singer, and it survives only as a line in two catalogues and a numbered gap in a collector's file list — which is a fair illustration of how thin the record for a 1945 programme picture can get.
