गुइयाँ सयास हाँ

This is the least legible entry in Aarti's song list. HindiGeetMala records it as 'Guiya Sayas Ha' and MySwar as 'Guiyaan Sayaas Haan'; neither gives a singer, and no lyricist is recorded for the film. The one word that reads cleanly is guiyaan (गुइयाँ) — the Braj and Awadhi word for a female friend or confidante, the sakhi to whom village and thumri songs address themselves. The rest of the title does not resolve into a stable Hindi phrase in either transcription, which is the characteristic residue of a song list copied and recopied from printed catalogue entries. The song is included here on the strength of its documented existence in two independent indexes, with its title recorded as received rather than corrected into something plausible.

Nothing about the music of this song is recoverable. No recording is in circulation, no review of Aarti's score has been traced, and the composers Ashok Ghosh and Ali Baksh are credited jointly across all ten numbers with no song-by-song division on record. The only inference the title permits is one of register rather than of setting: a song addressed to a guiyaan belongs to the women's folk repertoire — the sakhi-address form shared by kajri, jhoola and thumri — which in 1940s film practice was usually given a light rhythmic treatment on dholak. That is a statement about how such songs were generally handled, not a description of this one.

The sakhi-address is one of the oldest devices in north Indian song: the singer speaks not to the beloved but to a female friend about the beloved, which converts confession into gossip and makes the emotion socially sayable. Kajri, jhoola, chaiti and thumri all run on it, and Hindi film lyricists inherited it wholesale. 'Guiyaan' opens exactly that frame. Beyond the vocative, nothing can be read: the second half of the title is corrupt in both surviving transcriptions and does not resolve, and there is no lyricist name, no recording and no printed text to check it against. Aarti was a Screen Attractions Corporation 'social' directed by Ramchandra Thakur, with Surendra and Vanmala as its singing leads and Hansa Wadkar, Sheikh Mukhtar, Kanhaiyalal, Ansari and Harish in support. Five of its ten songs, including this one, carry no singer credit at all. Since Vanmala and Surendra are named on the other five, the unattributed songs were most likely sung by performers whose names the record labels had no commercial reason to print — but that is an inference about industry practice, and no source names a singer for this track.
