The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Ghata Sawan Ki Ghir Kar Aayi Re' — often quoted with its fuller opening, 'Aayi Re Aayi Re Ghata Sawan Ki Ghir Kar Aayi Re' — is the one straightforwardly lyrical, non-devotional number in the six-song score of Lakharani (1945). Qamar Jalalabadi wrote it and Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar composed it; the singer is a female voice that Hindi Film Geet Kosh does not name and that no later researcher has identified. It was among the Lakharani recordings that reappeared in the 2020s after Saregama began putting parts of its old catalogue on public platforms.
The Music

The song belongs to the oldest and most reliable of Hindi film categories, the barsaat number, but Krishnarao approaches it from the concert platform rather than from the village courtyard: the melody is carried by a single unhurried female voice with the phrasing of a trained classical singer, and the arrangement stays deliberately thin behind it. Listeners who write about the Lakharani songs consistently note this — that the music is beautiful on its own terms and completely out of step with what audiences of 1945, already listening to Rattan, wanted from a monsoon song.
The Poetry

Jalalabadi builds the lyric on the standard monsoon equation of Hindi and Urdu love poetry: the clouds gather, the season turns, and the fullness of the sky throws the singer's own longing into relief. Commentators file it under both 'expression of love' and 'missing the beloved', which is the classic double edge of the barsaat song — the same rain that promises union is the rain that measures an absence. Placed in a film about a community shut out of its own temple and a daughter shut out of her own tribe, the imagery of a sky that opens for everyone acquires a second meaning the lyric never has to state.
The Story

Prabhat made Lakharani in 1945 as a costume film about temple entry for all castes, set among tribal and forest people — a subject in the studio's reformist tradition, but a setting its urban audience could not identify with. The company was by then in visible decline: V. Shantaram had left to found Rajkamal Kalamandir, and the founding partner Vishnupant Damle died early in 1945. Vishram Bedekar, a playwright and novelist who had scripted Prabhat's Padosi (1941) and Ramshastri (1944), wrote and directed. The film failed, and with it the six songs disappeared from circulation for decades.
The Legacy

This is one of the Lakharani songs whose survival is owed entirely to institutional back-catalogue digitisation rather than to popularity: it was written about on Atul's Song A Day in March 2026 precisely because a copy had finally become findable, after years in which the researcher recording the film's history could not locate a single track. Its interest today is documentary — it is one of the few surviving pieces of evidence of what Master Krishnarao's film work sounded like in the year Prabhat's cinema ended, and of a school of composition that Hindi film music was in the act of leaving behind.

Margin Notes

The song is catalogued as 'Ghata Sawan Ki Ghir Kar Aayi Re' but is usually cited from its actual opening, 'Aayi re aayi re aayi re ghata sawan ki ghir kar aayi re'.

For years no song from Lakharani was available on any public platform; a few, including this one, only became findable after Saregama began uploading parts of its old catalogue.

It is the only one of Lakharani's six songs that is not addressed to a deity — the remaining five are devotional or Krishna-centred.
