The second of Shanti Kumar Desai's three compositions for Ek Din Ka Sultan (1945), with words by Wali Saheb. It is the only song of the film's nine for which no singer is recorded: Wikipedia's song table leaves the column blank and hindigeetmala lists only the composer and lyricist. The singer is therefore left empty here rather than guessed.

Nothing about the sound of this recording can be established. What is known is its context: Desai's block of three closes the film, he was a harmonium player who had been composing since Nav Bharat (1934), and the other two songs in his block went to Amirbai Karnataki and G. M. Durrani — so this one very likely went to one of the film's four documented playback voices, which also include Zohrabai Ambalewali and Rafiq Ghaznavi himself. That is as far as the evidence goes, and it is not far enough to name anyone.

'Duniya hai ek kahani' — the world is a story — is one of the standing propositions of Hindi and Urdu film verse, and it is doing philosophical work rather than decorative work. To call the world a story is to say that it is authored, that it will end, and that the position one holds in it is a role rather than a possession. In a film whose entire premise is a man given an emperor's throne for one day and then returned to carrying water, that is not a generic sentiment but close to the thesis. Wali Saheb was writing across a striking range within this one soundtrack — a wedding folk blessing, a Sufi devotional, Urdu ghazals, and this.

Ek Din Ka Sultan was produced and directed by Sohrab Modi for Minerva Movietone in 1945, from a story by Agha Jani Kashmiri, and drew on the episode of the water-carrier Nizam and Humayun's flight from Chausa. Amrit Gangar's study of Modi records it as a minor historical that was well received for its direction and production values. The film's records are incomplete in exactly the way this song entry shows: nine titles preserved, seven singers, one chorus, one blank.

This entry exists to hold a place in the film's soundtrack rather than to describe a song anyone can hear. That is a common condition for 1945 titles outside the handful of hit films, and it is worth recording honestly: the metadata survives, the music does not. If a 78-rpm label or an HFGK Vol. 2 page ever supplies the singer, the gap here is the first thing that should be filled.
