दो दिन की ज़िंदगी है

One of the five Kul Kalank sides documented without a singer and with no surviving recording. Its title is among the most heavily used phrases in Urdu and Hindustani lyric — life lasts two days — and it can be turned in either direction: a reason to seize what pleasure there is, or a reason to bear what cannot be changed. Which of the two this song chose is not recoverable; only the title, the composer and the lyricist survive.

The recording is lost, so the setting cannot be described. What is documented is the shape of the assignment: a 78-rpm side of roughly three minutes, composed by Allah Rakha under the name A. R. Qureshi for a mid-sized Bombay studio, in a score where every one of the eleven songs came from the same composer-lyricist pair. A title of this reflective kind would ordinarily have been given a slow setting, but no source states the tempo and none is claimed here.

The 'two days' of the phrase are not a measurement but a rhetorical device, and Urdu poetry has used them for centuries to shrink a life to something a listener can hold in one hand. In the film song of the 1940s the phrase usually arrives at a point of loss, where a character has to be reconciled to a decision already taken. Roopbani wrote all eleven of this film's lyrics, and the range visible across those titles alone — a saqi song, a nationalist march, a folk address to a husband, and this — is a fair map of what a working Hindi film lyricist was expected to produce for a single picture in 1945.

Kul Kalank was released in 1945 by Sunrise Pictures under the direction of Nanubhai B. Vakil. Its cast was headed by Shanta Hublikar and Masood; Amirbai Karnataki both acted and sang. Eleven songs are documented, all by Allah Rakha and Roopbani. No print of the film survives, and the songs are the only part of the production that can still be examined.

No recording, no reception, no later citation. The entry exists so that the film's documented soundtrack is listed in full rather than reduced to the four sides that happen to have survived commercially, and so that the gap in the record — a title with no voice attached to it — is stated plainly instead of being quietly filled in.
