The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of the eleven Chhamia songs, composed by Gyan Dutt to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari, with no singer recorded in any catalogue consulted. Its title is in the Urdu-leaning half of the film's vocabulary, and it has one unusual feature: the address is to a yaar — a friend or companion — rather than to a beloved, which sets it apart from the standard moonrise song of the period.
The Music

The recording does not circulate and no description of the setting survives, so nothing can be said about how Gyan Dutt scored it. Within the eleven-song sequence it sits on the Urdu side of the score, alongside the ghazal 'Vehshat Mein Apne Haathon' and away from the Braj and Punjabi folk numbers — a spread that is itself worth noting in a composer whose reputation rested on the devotional and folk registers rather than the Urdu ones.
The Poetry

The moonrise is the most worked-over opening in Urdu-Hindi song, and what distinguishes any particular instance is who is being spoken to. Here it is a yaar. In Urdu that word covers a wide range — comrade, confidant, and, in the ghazal, sometimes the beloved under a deliberately casual name — but its plain register is companionship rather than courtship, and a moon pointed out to a friend is a different gesture from a moon offered to a lover. It suggests a shared night, a conversation already in progress, an intimacy that does not need to declare itself. Beyond the title nothing of the lyric survives, so this remains an observation about a phrase rather than an account of a poem.
The Story

Chhamia (1945) was produced and directed by Protima Dasgupta for her own company, P.D.G. Pictures, from an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with Begum Para in the lead and a supporting company that included the comedian David, the dancer Azurie and Dixit. Gyan Dutt supplied eleven songs to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari. The picture was a commercial success and remained the high point of Dasgupta's short career behind the camera; it is not in circulation today, so its songs are known chiefly through catalogue listings and surviving 78-rpm discs.
The Legacy

The recording is not in commercial circulation and does not appear in the standard 1940s reissue compilations; it survives as a title in the Chhamia song list rather than as living repertoire. Its interest today is as part of the documented output of a hit film directed by a woman in 1945 — a body of work that the reissue market has never gone back for.

Eleven songs from Chhamia are listed in the gramophone catalogues, all composed by Gyan Dutt to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari; the catalogues attribute singers to only a few of them, and the film itself is no longer in circulation.

The film was adapted from George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion — an early Indian transposition of the play. 'Chhamiya' is colloquial Hindustani for a loud, showily dressed young woman, and names the film's Eliza Doolittle figure.
