अब काहे की उई री

One of the four Champa sides that survive as 78-rpm transfers, and the only one on the album documented as a male-female duet. The collector's label for the disc names Zeenat Begum and, for her partner, only 'male voice' — the male singer is not identified on any source traced here, and no name is supplied. The title's 'ui re' is the exclamation of mock alarm that Hindi film songs of the period used to open a flirtation, which places the number among the light scenes rather than the dramatic ones.

The recording runs just under three minutes, the standard length of a ten-inch side, and the two-voice form dictates the rest: alternating phrases short enough to be answered, a refrain both singers can land on, and a pulse steady enough for the actors to move to. Nothing more specific can honestly be said about the arrangement without a clean transfer to listen to; the disc that circulates is a collector's copy, not a restoration.

The title is a question thrown back at someone — 'what is all this fuss about now' — with the exclamation 'ui re' doing the work. In the songs of this period that phrase belongs to a woman pretending to be scandalised, and the scandal is almost always a courtship. What the verses do with it is not recoverable: HindiGeetMala lists the song but explicitly has no text for it, and no other source carries one. Beyond the title's register, nothing about the poem is documented, and nothing is guessed at here.

Champa was made at Shorey Pictures in Lahore for the producer Roop K. Shorey and directed by Barkat Ram Mehra; it opened at the Crown cinema in Lahore in October 1945 with Manorama, Asha Posley, Hari Shivdasani, Majnu, Salma and Zahoor Shah in the cast. No plot summary of the film survives, and no print is known to circulate — the discs, issued on Columbia and now in the Saregama catalogue, are effectively the whole of what is left of it. The male half of this duet went unrecorded: the surviving transfer prints the female singer's name and reduces her partner to 'male voice'. Shorey's own studio on Multan Road was attacked and burned during the Partition riots of 1947 and the company left Lahore for Bombay, which is part of why so little of this film's paper record is retrievable.

The song has a small second life in the streaming era: it appears on a digital reissue of the Champa album, where the auto-generated artist field carries a placeholder rather than a singer's name. That listing is the only reason the title is searchable at all today, and it is also a good illustration of why label metadata cannot be used as a singer credit for records of this age.
