आओ मेरे बाबू

A Bulo C. Rani composition from Chand Chakori (1945) with words credited to Pandit Indra and no singer named in any catalogue consulted. The title's interest is almost entirely in one word. Babu in 1945 Bombay usage meant the clerkly, city-educated, respectable gentleman - the colonial office worker and, by extension, the man from town - and a song that calls him over is placing itself in a very specific social scene rather than in the timeless landscape of the film's other titles. Without a recording nothing more can be established, and the singer field is left empty rather than filled by guesswork.

No recording has been located and no description of the music is offered. The catalogue records only that Bulo C. Rani wrote it, which places it among the thirteen numbers he composed for Ranjit Movietone in his second year as an independent music director. Whether it was a solo, a duet or a group piece is not documented anywhere, so no song type is entered.

Aao is an imperative of invitation rather than command, and mere babu attaches to it a form of address that carries class before it carries affection. Through the 1930s and 1940s the babu figure was a standing character of Indian popular culture - satirised for his English, his umbrella and his salary, courted for exactly the same reasons - and songs built around calling him are common in the period, usually sung by a woman positioned as more knowing, more local or more worldly than the man she is summoning. Whether this particular song was flirtation, mockery, street-vendor patter or straightforward courtship cannot be determined from a title, and no attempt is made here to determine it.

Chand Chakori was a Ranjit Movietone production directed by Kidar Sharma, with Mumtaz Shanti and Surendra leading a cast that also included Ashraf Khan, Maruti, Shanta Kumari, Nagendra and Baburao Pawar. It was the sixth highest-grossing Indian film of 1945 and no synopsis of it survives, which means that a light number like this one cannot be placed in a scene. Six of its thirteen songs, this among them, reached the catalogues with the singer column blank - a normal condition for Ranjit pictures of this period, where the studio's publicity credited the composer and the stars but not always the playback voices.
