Overview

The phet banam is a fretless, three-to-four-string plucked folk instrument of the Santal people that resembles a dotara and pairs with its bowed companion, the dhodro banam. Carved from a single block of wood with a skin-covered belly, it is the pulse of the songs and dances of Sohrai, Baha and bapla.

तत (Tata - stringed instruments)

In the Tata (stringed) category of the Natya Shastra, the phet banam is a plucked lute — its sound is produced by plucking the strings with fingers or a plectrum, not by bowing. This is precisely where it differs from its companion, the bowed dhodro banam.

Physical

Description English

The phet banam is a fretless, three-to-four-stringed plucked instrument of the Santal people that visually resembles a dotara. Its waisted belly is completely covered with animal skin, which acts as the resonating soundboard. The long neck is fretless, so the player stops the strings directly with the fingers.

Body

Waisted (curved-paunch) lute body, dotara-like, carved from a single block of wood

Solid wood (locally available hardwood; carved from a single log in the banam tradition)

60-90

Hollow wooden belly whose open face is stretched over with animal skin (goat / monitor-lizard hide in the banam tradition); the bridge rests on this skin membrane so string vibration is transmitted directly into the skin-topped chamber

Strings

Melody / playing strings, plucked with the fingers or a plectrum

Count: 3-4Description Hindi:
Material: Traditionally gut or twisted cotton/fibre; modern instruments commonly use metal (steel) wireTuning Example: Tuned to the pentatonic folk melodies of Santal song (no fixed classical Sa-Pa scheme); pairs/courses often tuned to a tonic and its fifth or octave, dotara-fashion
Tuning Hindi:

The phet banam typically has no separate sympathetic strings — unlike the sarangi. Its resonance comes from the skin-covered belly, not from resonating tarab strings.

Material: N/AInstallation: N/AFunction: N/A

Some players tune one of the courses as a recurring drone/rhythm string in dotara style; there is no dedicated fixed drone bank.

Count: 0-1Material: Same as main strings

Bow

None — plucked, not bowed

N/A (played with fingers or a plectrum). NOTE: the bow belongs to the companion dhodro banam, not the phet banam.

N/A

Plucked / strummed with the fingers or a small plectrum, guitar/dotara style

Tuning Pegs

Khunti (tuning pegs)

Wooden lateral tuning pegs set into the head/neck; some banams historically used bamboo tacks/pegs to hold and tension the skin and strings

Bridge

Sadam (bridge)

A small wooden bridge that sits directly on the stretched skin belly, so string vibration passes into the skin membrane and the wooden chamber below

Wood, resting on the animal-skin soundboard

Frets

The phet banam is fretless — the player stops the strings directly with the fingers, allowing meend (glides) and the subtle micro-ornaments of Santal folk melody.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The phet banam's tone is resonant, slightly nasal and earthy — the skin-topped belly gives it a warm, percussive lift. Unlike the weeping tenderness of the sarangi, it is a more rhythmic, celebratory folk voice, built to carry song and dance.

Timbre

Warm, buzzing, skin-membrane resonance with a plucked attack; drier and more rhythmic than a bowed banam

Range

Roughly two octaves of folk-pentatonic melody, matching the vocal range of Santal song

Dynamic Range

Moderate — designed for intimate courtyard and communal-dance settings rather than concert-hall projection

Techniques

Description English: Sounding the strings by plucking with a finger or small plectrum — the phet banam's basic technique, and exactly what distinguishes it from the bowed dhodro banam.
Usage: Backbone of all song and dance accompaniment
Description English: Sliding the finger along the fretless neck to glide between notes, lending the vocal-like flow characteristic of Santal folk tunes.
Usage: Ornamenting melody lines to shadow the singer
Description English: Strumming several strings together to build a rhythmic bed — used to drive the dance alongside the drums.
Usage: Group dances (sohrai, baha, dong)
Description English: Interlocking the melody with the theka of the tumdak (madol) and tamak drums, so the banam bridges song and rhythm.
Usage: Communal festival and wedding (bapla) music

The Listening Guide

To appreciate the phet banam, don't look for a solo recital — hear it at home. Pick a Santali Hul song or dance video where the banam's strum is woven into the beat of the tumdak and tamak. Notice how it shadows the singer and drives the dance. Its beauty is not in private lament but in collective joy.

Margin Notes

The Santal 'banam' is not a single instrument but a whole family of string instruments — dhodro, phet/phentor, huka, tendor and more. Among them, the phet banam is the plucked, dotara-like member.

Traditional banams were often carved with human faces, animals, birds or bongas (Santal deity figures); the belly of the instrument was seen as the human abdomen, on which the bridge rests.

The bowed dhodro banam is often described as a distant relative of the sarangi/sarinda family; the phet banam is the plucked form of that same family, sonically closer to the dotara than to the sarangi.

Questions & Answers
