The pepa is Assam's buffalo-horn 'hornpipe' — the most recognisable, shrill voice of Bihu. A single reed cut into a short bamboo pipe buzzes under the breath, and the curved horn turns it into a far-carrying joy. Alongside the dhol, gogona, taal and toka it is the soul of Bohag Bihu; yet with dwindling buffalo, the true horn pepa is now growing rare.

(Sushira - wind / hollow / blown instruments)
Among the four instrument classes of the Natya Shastra, the pepa belongs to the 'Sushira' (wind / blown) category, where sound is produced by the vibration of a column of air. In the pepa this vibration is set up by a single idioglottal reed cut into a bamboo or cane pipe and amplified by the flaring buffalo-horn bell.

Description English
The pepa is an Assamese folk wind instrument made from a buffalo horn. At its core is a short bamboo or cane pipe into which a single reed is slit and cut; the far (blowing) end of this pipe is set into the curving buffalo horn, which acts as a flaring bell that spreads and sharpens the sound into its characteristic shrill drone. The whole instrument is usually under two feet long, and a metal ring is fitted at the horn's mouth for decoration and strength.
Body
A short straight reedpipe terminating in a curved, flaring buffalo-horn bell
Water-buffalo horn (bell) + bamboo/cane/reed (pipe); modern substitutes use wood, cane or metal for the pipe

The hollow buffalo horn itself serves as the bell/resonator that projects and colours the reed's tone
Strings
None — the pepa is a wind (aerophone) instrument, not a stringed one; melody is produced by fingering the tone-holes over a single reed
None
The pepa's continuous, unbroken tone functions as a droning, buzzing sound rather than separate drone strings; skilled players use circular breathing to sustain it
Bow

Not applicable
None — a blown instrument, not bowed
0
Sound is produced by blowing across/into the single reed, not by a bow
Tuning Pegs

Frets
The pepa has no frets; instead the bamboo pipe carries finger-holes — five or six holes on the single-bodied form, and four holes on the double-bodied (juriya/xuriya) form. Pitches are changed by opening and closing these holes.
Reed
Single idioglot reed
The heart of the pepa is its single reed — a thin tongue slit directly into the bamboo/cane pipe that buzzes under the player's breath to give the fundamental droning tone. This piercing, unbroken sound is the pepa's signature.

Tonal Character English
The pepa's tone is shrill, piercing and buzzing — an unbroken, high-pitched drone that carries far across open fields. It is the sound of joy, harvest and spring; its nasal-sweet yet wild edge, fused with the beat of the Bihu dhol, becomes the very pulse of the festival.
Timbre
Bright, reedy, nasal and penetrating, with a continuous buzzing drone underneath the melody
Range
Narrow folk range of roughly one octave, set by the finger-holes; not a chromatic classical range
Dynamic Range
Loud and outdoor by nature — designed to cut through drums, crowds and open-air dancing; limited soft dynamics

To appreciate the pepa, begin with a Bihu performance. First hear its lone, high call — the invitation that opens the dance. Then notice how it braids together with the beat of the dhol and the buzz of the gogona. The pepa's beauty lies in its unbroken, flowing stream — watch how a skilled player blows on and on without a pause. This is not an introspective classical experience but a communal, open-air joy.

Folklore says a herdsman by the Brahmaputra heard musical tones as the wind blew through an abandoned buffalo horn, and from that the idea of the pepa was born. In other words, the pepa turned an accidental melody of nature into a human instrument.
The single pepa's pipe has five or six finger-holes, while the double 'juriya/xuriya' pepa has four holes and a second pipe that provides an unbroken drone. The double form is played for a fuller sound in large gatherings and processions.
In the Chutia kingdom an advanced form of the pepa called 'Kaali' developed, using a copper bell in place of the buffalo horn. It shows how this folk instrument evolved in material and form over time.
Shrinking pasture in Assam has reduced buffalo numbers, making suitable horn hard to obtain and pushing the pepa's price up (to around ₹2500 recently). For this reason the pepa is now also seen as an endangered craft in need of conservation.
Questions & Answers
